Made it out for an hour today, fishing was very slow. I kept getting pickups, and by the time I could react, they had spit the nymph out. Caught these on a little off-white nymph that Clay34 tied up for me. Yes, the carp is small, but its my first The wels catfish are hard to catch with any kind of gear, and normally get snagged instead of caught Sorry for the picture quality, but it was getting dark

I guess one upside of being in Iraq is that you're catching some species we back here in Texas are never gonna see.

From what I read earlier on wikipedia (if it's not true why is it on the internet? ) that those fish are pretty well endangered in a lot of the world. The former resident of that garden spot must have wanted some exotic fish to chase. Should we send you some largemouth fingerlings to spice things up a bit? On a more serious note, earlier I was thinking how interesting it must be to be able to fish somewhere exotic like that. Then it occurred to me that while Treebass is getting to do some interesting fishing, he is also on the opposite side of the globe from his family and friends. I'm as guilty as anybody about getting my priorities all upside down and wanting to spend more time on the water, but after I considered that little fact, I made sure to spend some quality time with the fam this evening. Treebass, while you're over there please keep sending us updates on what the fishing is like, but come home safe. From your posts and your signature, I'll bet you can hardly wait to spend some time on the water with your own crew back here at home. Thank you for your sacrifice and service and God Bless you and your family. Somebody post something funny, my screen is all blurry.

Thanks folks, and TxRedraider, that was a fantastic post!, Kinda got me for a minute.
Yes, I enjoy what I do, and even more that I can fish in what was once his private fishing resort. we did some fishing in '05, (post: When in Rome, or Iraq in photo section) but I never did any fly fishing here.
And no, carp are not my normal targeted species, we hang out in the whites and hybrids, crappie arena. Deckhand, Clay34 are helping me get my first carp on the fly, and the fish will only get bigger.
I miss my crew badly, but figure there's a higher calling for me to be here again. So I figure I'd adpot a new set of kids, and teach them the art of fishing, you'd be surprised how many folks here have NOT fished in years, or since they were kids! Some are still kids, and I intend on helping them get back into something I hold near and dear to my heart.
But again, thank you for your support and thoughts.

Don't know how I missed this one. Congrats man, I'm always late to the party. Thanks for your service to your country and also thanks for reintroducing fishing to people that have strayed from the righteous path and stopped spending time on the water I'm going to send you a picture directly of my son with a similar fish to what is in your fish shot. At least this fish seems similar to me. They remind me of a large golden shinner. All true carp have barbels or feelers or what some would refer to as whiskers. I can't tell in that shot but that fish probably doesn't have barbels. The truth is that is doesn't really matter what the exact species is. That fish was fooled by you. You fooled it with some goofy fly fishing equipment and while using something for bait that wasn't alive. It's cool to match wits with a fish in it's own environment. Congrats on winning. Rick
