Hey guys. I have been doing some research on old "ghost towns"
Are there any lakes in texas with old buildings etc? I think it would be neat to see them now.
Also, I saw a hazard buoy in the middle of grapevine lake. My question is what is down there? Some have said it is an old crane. I can't find anything on the camera or the depth finder.
thanks
Kenneth

So are Lakes dug out of the ground if so wouldn't this stuff be demolished during that process or do they just dam it up and let it fill naturally?

I've never seen them, but my maps of Texoma show several inundated towns.

Lake Arlington is suppose to have a lot of construction equipment at the bottom, it filled up faster than they thought it would and Joe Pool has a lot of historical history in it's depths

I doubt there are very many lakes with equipment left in them from construction, it's not like they just plugged the river/creek and didn't get out in time. Most lakes are usually cleared of trees near the dam, they usually build a diversion channel for the water or have some other means of diverting water while they construct the dam. Once the dam is completed they re-divert the water back into the lake and close the gates. I've worked for a lake authority for 15 years now so know a little about lake construction.

I think a lot of those equipment left in the lake stories are more urban legend than anything.

Kind of like the huge catfish that could eat a man down by the dams? I remember they had a guy who was trying to catch them and he had a heavy set up. His bobber looked like a no wake bouy. I think he left to search for bigfoot.

There are old buildings or foundations in many Texas lakes.

Not when the rain comes llike it did in '57? (I think it was). Was really concerned about the possible loss of Waco.

Hence why I said not in very many lakes, I wasn't dismissing the notion was just stating what I know, I've heard a lot of stories about many lakes with supposed equipment. wink

I do know of an airplane just south of the boat club in EM Lake, we surveyed the dam a few years ago with side scanning sonar and a magnetometer. After we were done we went searching for the supposed air plane and then found it. You could clearly see part of the tail laid over and some of one of the wings. We also graphed the old Peden Road bridge which is mostly silted over.

I do have GPS coordinates for sale if anyone is interested, caught a few fish off the airplane. grin

Lake Travis has a bunch of old buildings/houses under water. There are some old foundations, wells, and roads at Lake Granger. I have seen the Humminbird Si pics of both lakes.

I think they finally got all the equipment out of Arlington. It was down so far a few years ago that you could walk all the way across it. I thought that they cleared it out then. I grew up in Arlington and remember there being some bulldozers in the bottom of it. It used to be pretty dangerous from what I heard.

I am surprised that the historical Lake Tawakoni has not been mentioned. It covers the world's largest collection of beer cans.

There was an urban legend about Lake Houston having lots of equipment in it. What's not hearsay is that the mayor and his cronies bought up all the future lakefront land they could get their hands on before the project was public knowledge. Nice job perk!

Heard rumors of a gas station under Cooper..........

also (FACT) there's a couple little 'burgs under Table Rock
in Arkansas, 'cause my old boss used to scuba dive on them.
And yes, at least there, the giant, man-eating catfish stories are true; he speared a 100+ blue cat in '94 eeks

I know when they built Benbrook Lake they had to relocate several small cemeteries. There are multiple foundations in there as well.

I know the approximate locations of several sunken cell phones on Ray Roberts and Lake Lewisville. Also where a pink girlie pole went down (right Lite-liner?) on Ray Bob!!!! Some say if you listen closely to the wind, you can still hear the cries of the broken-hearted little girl yelling "get it daddy, oh no, get it daddy!!!!!"

I heardc about the "GIANT' catfish at the Dams. I heard about the ones at the Hoover Dam. They said scuba divers who do routine repairs and checks just up and quit because they "saw" them and were too scared to go back down....

My dad tells the story of bulldozers and such being left in Ray Hubbard due to the lake filling up faster than expected. So much so that they had to go out there on bardges to finish cutting the remaining trees off at like 10ft. He's pretty honest.

I love this subject! I am always curious to know whats down there!

I had a local historian on the boat last year. He showed me where an old Wells Fargo Stagecoach depot is under water. It is near the HWY 380 bridge. Across from it is a VERY old Texas and Pacific trestle, that is visible when the water gets real low.

In WW2, Bridgeport had a seaplane training base near the Methodist camp. There is supposed to be a huge block of concrete that was used to anchor the planes. I have heard it is like 10 feet tall and 40 feet wide. I have never found it, but old timers say it is Crappie heaven!

Hmmmm. One anchor for several planes. Seems like they would bang together. I wonder if a smooth (concrete covered with algae)block 10 feet by 40 feet would attract much more than an ordinary hump in the lake. Keith I think somebody is pulling your leg. It's right up there with the stories about equipmment getting covered because the water rose too fast to get out.

Well there are supposed to be catfish the size of cars on grapevine near the damn. My old history used to work as a ranger at grapevine and someof the divers that worked there said that they wouldn't go back down there because something the size of a school bus swam by them.

Believe it was Amon Carter that was done too if I remember the right lake. On my sonar looked like lots of rows of little hills and valleys close together.

Hey, I USED to be able to get cell-phone insurance. I might even be able to get it again, since I haven't lost a phone in a while (but I doubt it). And your little girl needs to look at is she upgraded. I wish everytime I lost something overboard, I could replace it with much better stuff!!!!

I doubt there is anything that big in grapevine lake. The water is so murky that chances are you couldn't tell what it was unless it was right on you. Maybe it was a big school of shad or something.
However I had a trot line out once and had a huge cat on it! It was long enough that I couldn't get the net under the fish. He bent the hook out and was gone.
I was one mad m/f!!!!

There is an old cemetery in Lake Whitney. The graves where all relocated before they flooded the lake, but the plats are still there. You can see them now that the water is so low.

There was a wrecked plane in meredith before it got low enough to be exposed last year or two years ago. They thought it crashed in the lake in the '80s but they weren't sure, never could find it including two individuals. Only found one tire floating the next morning. The plane was removed and no remains were found.

There's an old water tank under Amistad. (Actually, it might be out of the water now due to the low levels.) You can also find a couple dams that were built on the original Devils portion of the lake. Furthermore, there is an old house underwater where a couple of divers got caught many years ago and at least one didn't make it out. Thus, there are no diving buoys there so that doesn't happen again.

I have fished the area where the cemetery was. It is plain on the graph. Oh, and I did catch several 1-3 lbers there on crankbaits. Was pretty shallow there as I remember.

Isn't that church on the mexico side where the man from the united states was killed a couple of years ago. I think they were sight seeing there on jet skis.I know there are a couple of planes in moutain creek lake. I have seen a few foundations on lake fork.

May the Good Lord bless you with a bend in your rod.

Lake Arlington was finished in 1957 and at the dedication they said it would be full in 2 years maybe. 26 days later it was going over the spillway. They were still working on it with a dragline and that is what is still in the lake to this day. They never were able to find it. They think it sank in the muck.

hard to believe no one mentions Toledo Bend. Dad and I fished there many times when the upper part started filling and there were quite a few houses and small buildings almost submerged out in the middle of the flooded timber. We would fish around them and i remember how strange it seemed when i was a kid catching nice bass fishing under someones porch.

Tawaknoi also had some old homes/small building that were submereged around the tall man reach area.
