Once again I get to bring the great TFF'ers another "Jr Day On the Water" with another OUTSTANDING and TALENTED young angler.
This time "Jr Day On The Water" took Kyle Nitschke, from Conroe Texas, to Sugoi lodge in Mineola Texas. Sugoi Lodge is a Private retreat located just 3 miles from Walmart in Mineola and only 12 miles from Lake Fork. This was truly a awesome place to see and finally be a part of.
There will be 2 parts to this write up with PART 1 being Kyles day...well really weekend on the water and PART 2 being the GOOD TIME BOYS that went with me for the weekend.
First a little about SUGOI. This hideaway nestles in the thick forest of Mineola and offers quite and solitude to the visiting anglers. It's on a natural spring that keeps water pumping into the ponds. The spring is so good that they have to have a 8" drain pipe to flush water to help it maintain a constant level. Here's the crazy part, with a spring comes nice cool water...well not if it's 26 degrees outside. The water Temp Friday was in the Mid 30's and the bass had lock jaw greater than you could imagine. It happens and in a small body of water it really happens. They have a 3 ponds system for the water to flow and more trees and lay downs than you could fish in a day. Grass that caused the water to be so clear and pure you just wanted to jump in...IF IT WAS SUMMER...LOL. Hills of lush green grass that flow into the banks of the ponds and Tall Trees that line the others with shade and shelter. Log Cabin that will make you want to move to the country.
PART 1...Kyle Nitschke
Most of you probably remember Kyle from his 13.07 lb SHARELUNKER he caught last December from lake Conroe. Today I will give you a little more insight into the world of one of the BIGGEST BASS CATCHING JR'S I have talked to. When Kyle showed us ( Me, Robert, Thomas, Mark, and Vince ( his pictures ALL of our jaws nearly hit the ground. This kid has caught more bass over 8 and 9 pounds than you can imagine.
Kyle Talking about his 13.07 SHARELUNKER #456
Here's how Kyles weekend started.
Kyle and His parents drove from Conroe to Mineola on Friday January 16th to take part in the "Jr Day On The Water". This after his mom had to fly in that morning after a Busn trip from a City I can't remember, but do remember she said it was -19 degrees there...LOL
They arrived at Sugoi Lodge around 8 PM Friday Night and introduced there selves to everyone. We all took a minute to talk to Kyle and hear the GREAT STORY of the Share Lunker. It was about 9:30 PM when Robert Oleson got the bright idea to go do some night fishing, this didn't bother Kyle who we would find out later, was more of a HARDCORE fisherman than most all us old guys there.
We make our way to the lake with HIGH HOPES. The day bite had been off....heck it was 26 degrees during the day with a mid 30's water temp. A warm front had came through and the night temp was 37 degrees a lot more toasty than the 26 and having to scrap ICE off your reel every 2 cast.
Before Kyle got there we manage just 2 fish all day, and missed our fair share of others though. So the night fishing would pick up for us right...WRONG...well for us NOT KYLE.
We walk down to the banks to fish and Kyle starts off with a Dark colored Fluke, Watermelon Seed I think. He's not there 5 minutes and sticks a 2.5 lber and lands him. It's a quite night so the bass causing all the splashing had us curious.."How Big I Yell Out" Kyle replies a small 2.5 lber. I'm fishing next to Robert and say you have got to be kidding me. I have been here since 10 this morning and have yet to stick a fish.
It takes all of about 25 minutes and we hear SPLISH SPLASH...I know someone has stuck one but who???????? The SPLASHING stops and I hear Mark Werner this time..."Who Got It?"...I did Kyle replies just another 2 lber...At this time I would have PAID ANYTHING for a 2 lber.
It's 12:00 AM and I'm tired and Cold so I make my way to the Lodge and hit the hay.
I wake up early don't really know what time and shoot some videos...you can see them in PART 2...I walk into the kitchen and look out side to see Kyle fishing. This kid is a machine, after the weekend I could really tell he really loves to fish.
I head out to the lake and we climb aboard one of the 3 two man boats Sugoi has for there guest.
Even though the fishing during the day is tough Kyle keeps chunking and trying to trigger some strikes from some very FROZEN bass, the water temp on Saturday was 37 degrees..THAT'S COLD no matter where your at.
All day he attacked the ponds which would only yield 3 Bass all Day. Biggest going about 3 lbs.
Night Fall hits and we all make our way inside to where Kyles Mom has prepaid dinner, we all sit around and talk fishing for a few hours and I pick Kyles brain about Lake Conroe, you never know when I may be down there fishing a Big Bass Tour event.
Kyle was even picking our brains about Hubbard, his thought was you never know when you will have to fish a Lake...Great thinking, but I really hope I don't have to fish against him since Deep Cranking is his strength.
We all head back out about 9:30 again to attack Sugoi for some night fishing..It was warmer that night than the whole day before. We get out there and I attack some docks in the water, Kyle heads down to a grass point near the ramp and T-Ross goes to the Gazebo that over hangs the water. Within 4 cast Kyle has a fish on... it goes a little under 2. I asked why he rushed to that spot and he said he noticed some deeper grass on the edges during the day and wanted to throw a Fluke around it. The rest of the night would be slow except for one thing. Robert and I are across the lake when we hear a HARD hook set and some splashing, followed by a "OH MAN"...what happened Robert asked...."I Lost A Giant Kyle replies..a Big One"..Later we would find out kyle was throwing the Fluke past the grass and letting it sit slack line giving the slow biting bass time to take it. He pulled up on the line felt tension and lowered the rod to make sure it wasn't a stump, at that time he felt the line starting to move off and set the hook. He felt the fish and it was solid he states. I would have really liked to see that he tells us.
Day One Recap
We all retire for the night and plan to really attack the ponds Sunday with the forcast..Sunny/Windy and WARM...
Kyle Shows me his KNOT for the first Time.
Kyle Showing us his KNOT...
Sunday Morning we wake up and a fish out the ponds trying everything to trigger strikes in the 39 degree water. With the water so cold Kyle knows the bite will be slow. I told him I'm very sorry. I know the ponds hold some MONSTER BASS, but didn't know it would be this cold. Kyle replies "That's OK, you can control the water. You should come down to Conroe he adds" Well Kyle I'm going to take you up on that, this summer and do another "Jr Day" with you.
Don't let the number of fish fool you about Kyle, he's a great angler that out fished every other man out there this weekend. It took him a few minutes to figure out what it took us all day to. He makes the cast that gets 6" closer to structure.
Kyle Plans to go to A&M which..can you blame him...LOL
Kyle it was a pleasure and I can't wait to see how your Ignition Bass Tournaments on Conroe turn out this year. Good luck on the quest to be the first ever 3 time ShareLunker Angler.
Kyle on Jr Anglers
Part 2.
The Good Time Gang...LOL I will let the pictures and Videos explain it all..
Kyle is an exceptional young man with some very serious fishing skills. When most of us cast we hit a general area, he puts it in the spot. He knows enough about general bass behavior and time of year to make quality lure choices, correct for the conditions, without trial and error.
It is very obvious that he is a product of good parenting. This is a young man that is well grounded, intelligent, driven, articulate and polite. He will go far in the fishing industry and if the right companies find him; he will help take them with him. It was an honor and a pleasure to meet him and his parents and enjoy his Jr. Day on the Water.
I want to thank Casey, Gary Yamamoto and Rocky for the opportunity to enjoy Sugoi Lakes Lodge and Resort. While we faced difficult weather and water conditions which hampered our fishing, I have no complaints about the facilities and the available ponds and equipment. The ponds are easily fished from small boat (provided) or the bank. They have good cover, structure and depth where a variety of presentations might produce your next lunker. As hard as the fishing was, I just kept feeling like the next cast was going to be the big one.
The rooms were big and comfortable and designed fisherman friendly with available rod racks and room to scatter your gear. The central areas had comfy chairs/couches and a good big screen TV. The kitchen was well appointed and made it nice to not have to leave to fix a good meal. It was a very enjoyable weekend and a wonderful place to relax.

Trust me Mark, I KNOW how that is. If I cared what I looked like I would never go out in public!
Fishspanker, We aren't on 'em because we haven't been there but once in the past several months. Why don't we have a tourney between the 4 of us. me tyler vs. u and ape.
Kyle, A tournament between Tyler and you vs Fishspanker and Ape would not be fair to you, because years of knowledge always trumps youthful hope LoL. Good luck this weekend. Ape

Good luck tomorrow. Remember if it isn't working....punt. Finding them on the tournament day is actually alot better than finding them in practice.
Now as far as that tournament that would be like taking candy from sleeping babies. Of course we get to choose the best spots first. After all you were raised to be respectful of your elders.
PS - If you read this what the heck are you doing on the internet. You need to be preparing your tackle.

It was good to get to meet all of you for Kyle's D.O.W.. Kyle is an outstanding young man, and really is focused at what he does. This trip really did not show Kyles true ability as a fisheman, and I knew it would be tough for him, or anyone else out there that weekend. The fish in Sugoi get very lethargic in that cold of water. Glad y'all had a good time.
