The D Magazine Winner No.1 Ozona Grill & Bar4615 Greenville Ave. 214-265-9105 "Ozona stakes its claim right off the bat, using top butt (from the sirloin). But there’s more. They enhance the cut’s natural tenderness mechanically, producing a tender chicken-fried steak almost every time. The payoff is magnificent, and it comes in the flavor. Almost every CFS I’ve had at Ozona has been pleasantly robust and beefy. In fact, based solely on the flavor quality of the beef, Ozona is the best of the 70-plus restaurants I’ve visited for chicken-fried steak in the past year. The breading is always crisp and well seasoned, not upstaging the flavor of the beef, nor getting lost in the background. The sweet, mildly peppery cream gravy goes great with the beef and breading, but is unnecessary to enjoyment of the dish. Did I mention the price? At $6.95 for the lunch portion and $9.50 for dinner, Ozona’s chicken-fried steak is actually slightly below the average price for CFS in Dallas. Tender, flavorful meat. Crisp, well-seasoned crust. Great garlic mashed potatoes and spinach side salad. Consistent performance. Ozona’s chicken-fried steak is the best in Dallas." http://www.dmagazine.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?...314293F2B9A8AF7

Goodson's in Tomball and Cowboy Steakhouse in Kerrville. I've been eatin' CFS all over this state for almost 70 years and these are the two best I've found. When I say all over this state, I really mean ALL over this state. Goodson's is awful. I hear it was better when Ma Goodson was still around and before they moved into the new place 10 years or so ago. Now, its a big nasty grease wad. It compares to Hickry Hollow which isn't saying much. The Montgomery Steak House in Montgomery has a good one. Another good one is in Sonora, TX at the restaurant by the westbound 10 exit, they put the gravy on the bottom there and then put the steak on top of the gravy.

Its hard to believe but there is a Cajun food place in Weatherford called Boo Ray's that makes an excellent one. Actually my favorite thing on their menu. The steak is bigger than most can eat.

Gravy on the bottom is the standard method in West Texas if the restaraunt/cafe is local and not a chain/franchise.

I think that's right. The first time I ever saw it was out there some place when I was a kid. I've found that the really good places either put the gravy on the bottom or let you put it on, so that they're not just hiding a bunch of fried batter with a cup full of gravy.

Always loved the chicken fried steak at Frank's in Schulenburg. Maybe it's just the fond memories of eating it after many opening day dove hunts, but I still esteem it the highest.

I have to cast my vote as a draw, you can't go wrong with Mary's or M&M's in Fort Worth.

Next time you are headed north to let those Choctaw Indians scalp you......stop by Sherman and visit "TRACKS".
It's right on the corner of 75 and Houston. Or I should say just around the corner to the West on Houston.
Fast service, nice people and the chicken fried steak is totally fine!
