Hey Everyone,
I recently returned from a weeklong Belize fishing trip on Ambergris Caye. Although I've been fishing in Belize before this trip stands out because of the amount of Bonefish we caught this time. For the past few years I've made at least one trip per year to fish in Belize. It's kinda pricey so I don't get the chance to go as often as I like. However, this past trip my buddy and I booked with Belize Kayak Fishing adventures and decided to give Kayak Fishing a shot since the whole wee with accommodations was only $850.00. Can't be all that bad, right?
The operator of Belize Kayak Fishing Jim, is a long time resident of Ambergris Caye, Belize and has been passionately fly fishing for 20 years. He's an expert on the Belize fishing areas and was super helpful with anything we asked of him. He arranged everything from dinner plans for us or guided us to the beast bars to go hang out at after the fishing was done.
Our Kayak Fishing package consisted of 5 full days of fishing and 6 days of accommodations at a great little resort. The first day we fished, Jim loaded us up in the skiff with our Kayaks and took us to this little flats area that was only about 2 or 3 miles from the dock. He handed us waterproof maps of the area we were in and gave us a 10-minute detailed report of the structure of the flat and how the bonefish usually feed on it. How they work there way down one side of some mangrove shoots and u-turn and make there way back on the opposite site.
As we paddled in to this flat from the drop off point it became apparent that a skiff couldn't make it into this flats due to no access. However, once we got over the entrance the water went back to the typical 13 to 16 inches and all the shoreline mangrove areas were around 4 to 6 inches. I spotted a school of tailing fish and paddled about 100 yards form them. I put out the Kayaks anchor and slipped off the Kayak to stalk closer. It was amazing I got within 60 yards of these bonefish and started to cast. I missed the first one came up short. However the third cast was the charm. I dropped the number 6 Belize crab pattern about a foot in front of this bones nose and he immediately showed interest and took it. It was on!
The amazing thin is that Jim put us on flats that guides and skiffs can't go. I've never caught as much fish as I did with Belize Kayak Fishing Adventures on Ambergris Caye.
