Just got back from a 5 day Carnival cruise to Progresso and Cozumel Mexico. While in Cozumel I booked a trip with Nacho Euan a bonefishing guide on the island of cozumel. My lovely wife decided to join me as well. I was using a 9' 8wt fly rod and she was using a light weight spinning rod. I was throwing a size 6-10 shrimp pattern. We were fishing the lagoons on the north side of the island, which are shallow and clear. We took a short boat ride to our first location and anchored the boat. We got out and began to wade the flats in search of the elusive bonefish. I hooked into my first fish within 30 minutes and the fight was on. I have never done much salt fishing so I didn't know what to expect with the fight. It was unreal, when the fish bites you don't even set the hook, you simply let go of the fly line and hold on for dear life. The first fish was the largest of the day and came in at about 3lbs, 3lbs of lean mean fighting machine. Shortly after I caught my first second fish, my wife managed her first bonefish which made my day. I've never seen her so excited about fishing before. In total I caught 3 bones and a mangrove snapper, and she managed two bones and a small baracuda. I look forward to returning and this time booking a full 8 hours. The guide said that had we had time to reach the third lagoon we probably would have caught numerous tarpon in the 15-20 lb class. Anyway, plans are now underway to take my dad bonefishing. If you have never done it I highly recomend it, it is a very intimate and exciting fishing trip.

Glad to read your report and that Nacho is still guiding. He's the best on the island.

ahaha!! so much fun!

i was in Playa del Carmen, Mexico over christamas break.
i brought my fly rod and some crazy charey shrimp. The first day i went out on my resorts beach at about 5:30 AM. I saw a school of baitfish busting the surface a couple of feet out. Dropped my fly in the middle of them and cought my first bonefish!! Next 3 casts where fish as well but the second one got off so i got two bones. It was one of those days when u hope you dont get a fish on you next cast so you forearm can rest :]

I didn't bring my camera down to the beach though so no pics.

Did Nacho still have his famous sandwhiches, and 1982 Vaurnets that he can see through lead with?

How about the VW bus w/no doors, floors, and a look that would make any old hippie green with envy?
