I got the Griffin vise in the mail today. It looks like an old 1A. I cannot wait to try it out.

Congratulations, it should be a new 1A to you. That's a good vise. Tie up something and show us.

Well I tied a couple of flies on it late this afternoon. It will take some getting used to. It seems you have to adjust two screws and make it a level gap when you put a hook in. That slows me down a bit, cause I am not used to doing that. The vise also does not tilt. But at least it will hold a hook properly, and that is the main thing.

kelly, it takes a little getting used to, but once you get the front (small) screw adjusted, then all you have to mess with is the rear (large) one until you change hook sizes, i really like the way mine holds, it is a definite VISE... is it c-clamp or base mount ?, i have both & the c-clamp will hold steady thru lots of deer hair.. congratulations too, lets see some flies

It is a C-Clamp vise. LOL...I am not home, so can't make more flies. I plan to turn some out soon though. I made some Holographic Soft Hackle flies, but need better soft hackle. Mine wasn't quite right for the fly...it was a little small. I am going to have to get some decent soft hackle. I am going to be tying some Red A$$ Nymphs when I get some decent soft hackle. Now I am using hen feather in ginger color from Jann's Netcraft. It is okay, pretty color, but as I said....not quite good enough for the fly I mentioned. I did these flies for a fly swap, and shipped them off today. It is my first fly swap ever. I wish I had decided to do a Green Butt fly for the swap, because that one came out better with my ginger hen feathers.

Kelly, I can adjust a dual-screw jaw faster than I can a cam jaw because I tied for so long on a 2A!!!!

You'll get used to it pretty quick. That big knob is big for speed-- as Mike said it's your open and close knob. Most of the time you can ignore the front one. I'm not trying to steal Mike's thunder here but my guess is you didn't get an instruction manual.

What you do is take an average size hook you are gonna use, maybe you tie most of your bass flies on a #2 Mustad 3366 for example. Adjust both screws so that the jaws are parallel-- all the way from the tip to the back-- and a little wider than the hook so you can easily slide it in and out... Then all you do is hold the hook where you want it and crank the big knob once quick. Unless you go to a radically different hook wire size, you won't have to adjust the little knob anymore.

Well that certainly helps. I guess it will just take some getting used to. It does hold a hook very good, and I am pleased, because I hate it when I was tying before and a hook came loose on me. Thanks for the heads up, and no I didn't get an instruction book. It came with a sheet saying to adjust both screws an make sure the gap was level. Y'alls additional instructions will be beneficial, thanks.
