Hi folks,

My boat has a 24-volt Motorguide trolling motor mounted on the front, with a three-prong plug that it attaches to for power. The batteries for it are under my center console. I've been thinking about installing an onboard charger, but everywhere in the boat seems to get wet once in a while. Inside the console is pretty cramped too ... not much room in there.

I've seen some adaptors that allow you to charge the batteries through the three-pronged plug -- I am guessing these would allow me to hook up a standard charger directly to the plug in the front of the boat to charge both of the trolling batteries, which would be convenient. Anyone have experience with these?

Pull the panel off the boat where your t/m pluggs in and make sure that when you wire the male plug that you are red to the two reds and black to the two blacks. is your t/m a 12/24 or just 24?

Thanks -- I will check out the panel when I get it back from the shop. The motor is a 24V Motorguide saltwater version ... not sure of the model number.

I think I will also be looking for a quick disconnect mount for the TM -- I do not like the way the trolling motor interferes with opening the front compartment in the boat.

I checked out the motor -- it is a Motorguide 24V, 67-lb thrust motor.

On the batteries are there 2 wires comming from the t/m to the batteries or 4 if you have 2 with a short wire between the + on one battery and - on the other then you are wired for 24v if you have 4 wires 2 + and 2 - then your t/m plug changes it to 24v. if this dosent make sense you can pm me and I will send you my phone number.

You can charge the battery`s at the trolling motor plug with a 24v charger.

To charge through the bow plug you would need a four prong plug to charge them with a 12 volt charger. You can get a 24 volt charger that would work but they are spendy and heavy for the most part. Most AC onboard chargers should be water proof and should be fine to install.

Please explain how to use a 4 prong plug to charge them with a 12volt charger.

Up until 1999 most boats were still using four wires from the trolling batteries up to the box plug. If you have all four wires to the bow you can get a red charging plug and it will allow you to charge them both from the bow with a 12 volt charger. Most boat now have only two wires and the batteries are crossed together at the batteries. If you want you can contact me direct and I can tell you how to do it. You don't need to buy my products to do it. good Luck

Thanks for the replies ... I have been busy at work and have not had time to read very much.

My batteries are crosswired like you said, with a three-prong plug up front. I'm leaning toward an onboard charger now under the console ... the service rep at the boat shop I use said they could make the install look good (I was concerned about the holes through the side of my console).
