I just have a few questions about shark fishing, I will be using a 6/0 penn senator, what kind of rod would be best to use for beach shark fishing with this reel, also what leader do yall use for surf shark fishing, like when you yak the bait out their about 400 yards, what the best leader to make for this.. thanks yall

i put my Penn 6/0 on a ugly stick, I can't remember the model, its 8ft and rated heavy action for lines 50-80. Its got good back bone and doesn't cast far but since you'll be yakking the lines out, shouldn't matter, spool the reel up with power pro and put the bait in the third gut, that setup will catch em

12' American Rodsmith will do just fine with a 6/0 loaded down with 50# line. Awesome rod for the money.
The leader above....I would not use a coast lock snap swivel to join the weight and tag lines. That's a weak link right there.
use a "quick link" at least.

We caught a 12 tiger on a coast lock snap swivel just like that. Worked fine If I was fishing a 6/0, I would not use a rod longer than 8 feet. Deaver

You can use a rod over 8ft on a 6/0. In fact I like useing a longer rod for my 6/0, or reels about the same size. 1) you can cast them if it is too rough to yak, or if its night and you dont want to yak at night. 2)gives you more elevation over the water when the seaweed is there. 3) you can still land big fish on surf rods here some pictures of fish that we have landed this summer on surf rods. Here is a 7'10'' lemon shark caught on a casted trinidad 50 on a 11 1/2ft gander mnt. guide series surf rod. yes i know its not a penn 6/0, its a little smaller but puts out more drag. Here is a 8'1'' lemon shark caught on a penn 12/0 mounted on a old school 10ft all star. this is the 7'3'' lemon shark I caught this summer on a newell 646 mounted on a 12ft american rodsmith. The 8'1'' and 7'3'' were both on yaked baits.

Its funny how much bigger you can make a shark look when you stand behind it a few feet. Did yall notice that or do I need to get my eyes checked?

Welcome to the Texas Fishing Forum Mudskipper, good to see you catching some fish.
I would still not go over 8 feet with a 6/0. If you get something really nice on your 6/0, something 400 lbs+, you do not want it to be on a 12 foot surfrod.
The shorter the rod the more leverage the angler has. Simple physics.
Difference of opinion, but I am going to have to stay with my post to Puretexan.

True on the shorter the rod the more leverage you have, it is simple physics. But I would much rather have more clearance over weed, sand bars, and the ability to cast when too rough to yak or fishing off a pier. A guy by the name of oscar landed a 10ft tiger off of pins on a 10ft ugly stick and a 9/0. So you still have a chance to land a big shark on a surf rod.

9/0 with a rod longer than 8' I used coastlocks long ago, but somebody from the old boards, team deek or so, lost a nice fish from the coastlock coming unsnapped and then straigtning out. coast locks are nice and fast, but why have that chance of coming unsnapped and just us a quick connect?

Well then gentlemen we are at a difference of opinion on this one. I like snap swivels for a generic leader I would fish on a 6/0, and experience says that is not the weak link for landing a shark for a 6/0.
I would not advocate a 12' surf rod for a 6/0. You can used a 10' surfrod on a 6/0, but I do not think it is the best set up for a 6/0. A 6/0 is mostly used for kayaked baits and fishing offshore. If someone wants a larger reel to go with a 12 foot surf rod, a 4/0 wide is on the larger size. The 6/0 is hard to fish without a kayak.
