I fished Dunlap this morning, launching from 35, but didn't get to far up river because I idled along because I could see rock bolders somewhat close to the surface 20-30 ft from the bank. The lake level was low. I was wondering if there is anything to be aware of when fishing dunlap, such as sumerged stumps, rock piling, etc. I didn't want to speed up river because it was my first time out to this lake. Can you cruise around the lake with not problem or fear of hitting a submerged object that isn't boyed off? Any fishing tips for this lake would help as well. Had a tough morning.

Three things about Dunlap. First it is a great lake to fish however the water is very clear. Small 1/32 oz. jigs will catch bluegill and small bass which will help your confidence. Wacky rigged trick works and senkos also work well with long casts. Everything that looks like it will hold fish usualy does. The fish position themselves deeper than you might expect due to the clairity.

The lake is very safe I think all the bad stuff is marked. That said you should always be careful first time out. You will see lots of wake board boats and jet skis and you can follow them.

Lastly you will see lots of wake board boats and jet skis...

Good luck.

once you run it with the depth finder up and down you will find the river channel. after that its easy money. most of my luck has come towards the lower half of the lake.

Dunlap is fairly safe water, like previously stated stay on the channel and you should be fine. I have seen some 4-5+ lbs bass patrolling the flats and I caught my first TX Smallie in there.

I think Dobro nailed it with the lure choices so I will leave it at that. Good Luck out there.

Another good lure on Dunlap is Rapala DT-6 or DT-10 in bluegill. The bluegill even love it.

I would be careful with the low water around the mid lake area. There is a big flat that can be very shallow. Watch the depth finder and stay in the river channel.

I wanted to get everyones opinon on how well a jon boat w/ just a trolling motor will be able to drift down river (not the part im concerned about) and then be able to rely on just the tm to get back up river to the ramp (part im concerned about). My dad took me out there a lot when I was younger but it has been a few years and I cant remember how strong the current is. Wish I had an engine to rely on but dont have it at the moment. Just wondering if anyone had a thought on if I can make it back up river.

plenty of good water to fish near the IH35 boat ramp so u dont have to go to far, make sure to take an oar with u incase though. i have seen kayakers go from the ramp all the way to the dam....

the water's not moving too fast right now i would worry more about the strong wind we have had.

I got to find out the hard way how well my boat handles the wind when i took it down to Choke, it was only 15 mph with some higher gusts, but 2-3 foot waves with just a tm isnt fun. hoping dunlap is narrow enough to avoid big waves if the wind comes up. just wish i had a fiberglass boat.... one of these days!

Damn bills

you can also put in at cypress bend park in new braunfels and float down to the boat ramp under i-35. not many people, and some decent fishing. nice for a jon boat, but you shouldn't have any problems on dunlop.
