My daughter Ellie had a big day of fishing this past Sunday. We were fishing Lake Dunlap in New Braunfels and she caught this monster bluegill. The fish was just shy of 11” and I entered it into the Texas Elite Anglers program on her behalf. The lake is a great lake to take kids fishing. We catch numbers of bluegills with good size but this is the biggest to date. She and I of course were very excited and of course I just had to brag…

that lake has some big ones...I caught the biggest redear sunfish of my life on a bandit crankbait while fishing out there.

Don't know the measurements, but it was well over a pound.

Congrats to her for that fish...monster sunfish.

That looks like it might be a longear, or perhaps a longear/bluegill mix? The gill flap is longer than most bluegills, and many bluegills that size have 'steeper' shoulders, don't they?

Nice fish, regardless.

That is a redbreast sunfish, the long ear opercule marks it as one. It is sometimes called "yellow belly".

The State record redbreast is 12 inches interestingly caught on the Comal near where your fish came from. Yours is a real prize, certainly worthy of bragging rights.

Once caught a fish like that a few years back in California on a wad of chicken liver. Made me mad, though ... the darned thing didn't even try to put up a fight. Just followed the line on in like it was tired or something. That didn't keep it from tasting scrumptious!!!!

Jody Gray with TPW called and told me that Ellie is the proud owner of the catch and release state record for both adults and juniors and is sending certificates to Ellie for both...

Thanks for all the nice comments, she has enjoyed reading them. I believe I have a fishing buddy for life.
