Was rope yeah, but what you see in the pic is just lint, the rope was about 7" long and 1/4" thick, wet it weighed about as much as the fish, and the fish doubled over an 8 weight, had another earlier that was bigger doubled over a 10 weight, strong too.

Do they call them Gar because when they smash those teeth through your thumb and forefinger you scream, "gaaaaaarrrrrrrr!!!"?

I am a NOOb to Gar, If you get one of those critters on, how do you grab or hold them if you don't have a net to get it out of the waterand get your hook OUT. I suppose a lip lift would not be good, better to cut your line.

Looks like you threw away another state record Dave. The state fly fishing record for longnose gar is 4.54#. If I recall correctly you ate the last could-have-been state record yellow bass you caught. Yesterday Christian and I were fishing at Lavon and we saw a bunch of carp and buffalo surfacing. I told Christian that I was going to go to Grapevine and beat your lake record carp over there! You would have a heart attack if I did that!!!!!
