This gadget tests the water color and suggests the best bait color for your conditions. I was wondering if anyone uses one and if so - is it worth 100 bucks? It seems to me that the color could be different at the bottom of the lake which would make this thing useless.

I have one of the first analog models that I haven't used for years. The way it works is that the probe is lowered into the water to the depth you are or will be fishing. The color it suggests changes with the depth of the water. There are three scales to use for the color depending on water clarity.

When the original came out, lure manufacturers made baits that matched the Color selector colors. I used mine way back then for plastic worm color more than anything, probably because I was fishing Texas rigged worms about 75% of the time. I still am not sure if it helped.

This item measures the light penatration at what ever depth you lower the probe to thru a sensor in the top, Then suggests color according to light. The older analog units seemed to work better than the new digital ones. Had a analog for years in Calif. and worked very well. Got a digital and always seems to register Green colors in all lakes fished in Texas at a depth of 6ft. or more.

I have one of the old analog ones and still use it. When me and my 3 other family members are trolling for Bass with Rattletraps, the color selector's color choice catches more fish almost all of the time. There have been days that we weren't catching anything, checked the color selector switching to a color that none of us even considered using, and proceeded to have one of the best days ever. It could be coincidence or chance, but how many years does it take to be sure? May never know. 20 years is probably enough. You drop the probe down to the depth you think your lure is running.

I use to have the old color selector and I don't know how many times it was correct. Wish I could find it. Lost it in my move 10 years ago.

I have an analog one and use it. It is confidence tool, when I'm struggling I use it and have found that I will catch fish. Whether it is the color c lector or just coincidence, I'll never know.

Used one when they first came out. Some of those colors looked wild but worked....
