Just returned from 3 day fish at POC. Thurs. & Friday nothing I knew seemed to work. Water extremely high therefore not a lot of water movement. Froggies boat launch was almost underwater. Never seen it that high. Not a lot of water movement in and out with high water. Difficult fishing in L. Pringle, Grass island, Saluria, J-Hook, Fish pond, Mitchells cut, Twin Lakes, Power Lake, Long Lake, Panther Lake. However, we weren't wading (darnit). Lots of floating hazzards in J-Hook, cavillo pass, & especially Sunday beach. Took a run out to the greens but wind was wrong and had little luck.
Heard some reports of action in Long Lake & the back lakes like Power Lake. Tried to fish Power lake. Bear in mind I'm in a 22' triton bay boat (13" draft). Not really suited for that area but I made in Power Lake somehow. Same I didn't make it out. Spun a prop and had to be towed in some 20 miles back to POC. (not one of my brighter decisions)
Had luck at outside the Jetties on east side as north wind calmed that area nicely. Caught 30" bull red there. Lots action at jetties on shrimp & sardines.
With boat broke down, I called my regular guide (Mike Bohac of SeaDrift). Friday we started in Hines Bay. Did very well on reds & trout as the water was down considerably. Limited out on Slot reds, nothing under 24" using cracked crab & shrimp. Caught 10 trout nice size at Hines up against the grass. Tried several places, steamboat, Shoalwater, Long, Power Lake (again), Panther etc. Nothing much happening there. Quit midday and came in early to repair boat. (REMINDER TO SELF: take extra prop/sleve!!!).
Quite a trip, we fished literally everywhere from the greens at POC to the far side of San Antonio Bay, approx. 35 mile stretch. San Antonio Bay was so blue as the wind laid down and turned water to glass for several hours, beautiful!!! Had a blast even though we had a slow start and a break down. Did I mention our trailer flat after being towed back?
Must plug POCO LOCO Lodge. Cleanest, nicest hotel you'll ever stay at. Free ice, starbucks coffee, fridge stocked with drinks, candy & snacks in the room. Even has complimentary Corona's & juice in the club house. Has a boat cleaning facility complete with 2 hoses & an assortment of ear muffs to clean engine. Just be careful about playing poker with the owner Mike!!! Try his duck/fish trip. 3(I think) duck hunts, 1/2 day fishing trip, duck dinner saturday night...$450/per, min. 2 ppl. Leave a little something (tip) for Debra who keeps that place spotless!!!!
