Boil 1 cup of water. Once water reaches boiling point turn down to meduim and add flavoring. Then slowly add 1 cup of cormeal. Stir for about 5 minutes. Take bait out of pot and allow to cool on foil or wax paper. Flaten the bait out during the cooling process. Good Luck. This recipe is very simple but very effective. If you want to make this bait stay on longer add a very, very little bit of flour. I am talking about a small handfull.

Would HoneyNut Cherios stay on the hook long enough? Probably a dumb idea.

Is there a brand of dry dog food that will sink and be good for a chum?

I used to live near a very small pond that had some catfish. The pet ducks laid eggs every where around that pond. I go a wild hair one day and took a duck egg and stale bread to make a dough ball. It was too soggy so I added dirt until it formed up good enough to stay on a hook. Put it on my fly pole of all things and dropped the dough ball in a fallen tree next to shore.
Caught old "Gotch Eye", a 5# or so channel catfish that was blind in one eye. He was so ugly I had to put him back.

Is anise oil a good flavoring?
I bought a once jar of it 2 years ago cause a man convinced me that fishing "french fry" worms dipped in oil of anise was a sure fire way to catch bass. Didn't work for me, but it sure has my tackle box smelling different.

I have plans for tomorrow of setting up at the LOP spillway with chum and carp bait and my easy chair and a good book and hoping the one carp that inhabits that pool will find its way to my hook.

you can also get a loaf of bread. tear a piece off of a slice and fold it over the hook. keep pressing the bread to the shaft and eye of the hook. the area around the hook area should just kinda press it gently and throw it in the water. The bread will chum itself and become bouyant around the hook part, which will result in more hook-ups. I've caught plenty of catfish doing this also, but so will dough bait if they're biting.

Never tried cheerios but I imagine if they were worked into a decent dough they'd stick on the hook well enough for a while.

Anise is a great scent/flavor for both carp, and catfish.

I was thinking cherios are already in a shape that would stay on a hook, or even on that tag end of a line with a stopper like you guys fish with. Ok I for got the name. I even made bait threader but can't recall the name for it.

(PS, that's normal for me. On a normal day I won't remember the next day what I did the day before.)

its been know to catch carp on anise if you put it into doughbait dont put alot because it is VERY STONG and it could cause the carp/buffs not to feed.

Well, I think I am in the process of making my first batch of boilies. The recipe is egg, flour, cornmeal, molasses, flavoring (I used anise oil and vanilla). Mix it all in to a dough. Roll the dough into finger size snakes. Cut of a thumb size piece of dough and roll it into a ball. Drop in Boiling water until they float. Refridgerate until used.
I am inconsistant on the size but they are floating. They are a dark tan dough ball. Seem pretty sticky. Bounce when they get dropped on the floor.
I am going to try to thread them the tag end of line hanging below the hook. (I know there is a name for it. I just an't remember it.)

I am wondering if these might attract catfish?

I spent several hours watching carp fishing clips from Matt Hayes on youtube recently. If you used every piece of equipment he is using (and selling) you would spend several thousand dollars to go carp fishing. I sure don't have the patience or dedication to go spend the week end in a tent waiting for one bite.
I am prepared to go to the LOP spillway (where I have witnessed the catching of one carp by mistake and the taking by bow and arrow of two more t his summer)and set out a couple of rods set up for carp while I fish for other species. If there is a chance to catch a carp, or a buffalo, or catfish then the setup will be worth the time.

Grandpa, you're right about that! When I was single, perhaps, I could have spent that kind of money on tackle, but now, with kids in and about to start college, I make do with what I have.
$9 on a rod rest, etc.
Make sure you set your drag way low on the carp rods or else you could lose your gear!
Good luck.
