I just bought a new Skeeter with 787c2's front and rear. I have a real problem with them that I hope is just set up related. When I get in less than 5 foot of water the depth reading go haywire! What I mean is the readings get really sparatic. It will jump from 0 to 3 to 1 to 3.6 to 0.9 to 1.4 ( you catch my drift) LOL I have changed them from 200mgz (?) to 83mgz and so on. Really nerve racking!!! If this can't be fixed I will definatly be asking Skeeter to change these to Lowrance. The way I fish the lakes around here I need a graph that gives me true reading in shallow water.

Ok will do. To answer your question Eve, I need it simply for idling around among other things. Your safe to idle fast when the graph shows 5 ft. Not so safe when it's jumping around and you can't tell what's going on. Has anyone else had this problem? By the way the first thing I did was reset the factory settings.

Every once in a while mine will do it but the picture is always correct and I can use the depth lines to see where I am at. No biggie, my Lowrances did it sometimes too.

In water that shallow I would set the unit on 200kHz, set a manual depth on the unit just deeper than you will be in i.e 10 feet for 5 foot depth) and then adjust your Surface Clutter setting up. This will get you a really reading is shallow water. Setting the manual depth lets you have the screen filled up with the 0-10 foot view.

Shayne, is it just on the trolling motor or the console and trolling motor? If its the puck transducer in the hull it's getting air inside the epoxy used for installation. You can check by putting some water in the bilge to eliminate the air. If its on the trolling motor I would say its the transducer itself. I forgot to ask yesterday, but the first thing I would do is download the very latest software for the units, restore to factory defaults and try the suggestions I made yesterday again. We'll figure it out.

I had the same problem in shallow water (10 feet and less) with The HB 997.
THe problem for me was that I had adjusted the surface clutter to reduce the surface cluttler to about nill.
Well, I assume that must have adjusted the sensitivity in the shallow range (10 feet and less). So I changed the surface clutter setting back to the Default Setting and that corrected the probelm (But of course I have a little more surface clutter than I wanted).
I bet it's your surface clutter is set to high (trying to eliminate to much surface clutter).

When you get the software loaded check a couple of things for me. Don't forget to Restore Defaults on the unit after installing the new software. Are you getting this errtic reading with both units on? Have you tried making sure no other electronics are on in the boat and just try one 787? Is it only the digital depth that is jumping around? Is the bottom showing correct depth?

Ok, Eddie I just downloaded the new software and loaded the graphs. I will restore default settings and try them out tonight. It doesnt matter if one or both are on I have tried them both. I thought that one was reading the other so I turned one off and no help. Thanks for staying with me on this and hope to get it resolved. The only thing keeping me from buying a 1197 is this issue.

Shayne we had the same problems with our 787's ended up having to get the transducer in the boat replaced. Still have not had any luck with the one on the deck. If you figure them out let me know. good luck on worth tonight!

Ok now I'm getting pretty ticked off! I still haven't had any luck in this situation!!!! I have tried everything that has been suggested! I don't think that if you buy a brand new boat with brand new graphs you should have to work on them!!!! This is not directed at anyone, but I need to vent a little! Shayne, I understand your frustration. I talked with CSR and they said they talked with you. I took 2 brand new 787's out on the water this morning with no mods. Both units read perfectly at 2.5 feet. I guarentee the problems you are having are not the norm. I have not seen a unit that could not be fixed by replacing a transducer in the hull that has air bubbles or incorrect installation or adjust the unit as I described on the trolling motor. I have heard horror stories in the last few weeks about our competitor's units being replaced 2-3 times on new boats and waiting 5-6 weeks for repairs. I assure you we stand behind our products and will do everything possible to make you happy in the shortest time possible. As long as humans are involved in any mfg process you can and will have some issues - no mater what company you are. I would be glad to look at your units personally on the water. If they function properly then we need to look at the ducer installations and for electrical interferrence from the boat itself. Please contact me at ekendric@johnsonoutdoors.com

Mark, I agree with you on the surface clutter. 9 times out of ten on the trolling motor that is the culprit.

The transducer is mounted under the jack plate on my boat. Several people have looked at it and have seen nothing wrong with the installation. The GPS continues to work fine while the other two features are jacked up.
The unit has been on my boat for less than a week and the only setting changed thus far has been the Si freq from 455 to 800.
I will update once I get the software update completed.

I will update once I get the software update completed. Keeb, Try adjusting your Surface Clutter (not to decrease it but to increase it). Get in shallow water and then when you are having the problem, adjust surface clutter until the problem corrects itself. That is what I would try. Also a note on the 800 KHZ: When I use the 800 kHz for SI and have the 83 kHz on (for the 2D), then I get/see interference from the 83 kHz on the 800 kHz SI. So when on 800 kHz, use the standard 200 kHz (for your 2D).
