Lately I've been hearing stories about engines needing work due to the lack of lubercation from this low sulfer fuel. If true, I guess that we are now getting to the point where the results of that low sulfer fuel are showing.
I've been adding that Power Services additive every since the low sulfer fuel was mandatory. Recently I have changed to 2 stroke engine oil. OK results so far. I really haven't used it enough to comment.

So my question is what do you add to your diesel and how much?

I have heard:
used engine oil
ATF
2 stroke oil

I've never heard of adding 2-stroke oil to a diesel engine. I was under the assumption that the engine oil supplied adequate lubercation for internal parts.
Seems that adding 2-stroke oil would defeat the purpose of a cleaner burning fuel.

First off, what is the year model of the truck you are adding the additive to?

You cannot add anything to an '08 or newer diesel engine, bad things go down when you do.
Clog up the D.P.F., it will also create sulphuric acid and eat anything and everything up on the cold side of the engine.

If it is an older truck, ATF is a good one to add, burns hotter and will clean the injectors.

I've herd you can add regular ole vegatable oil, but I've never done it.

2cycle for me for the moment. I have just started using it on the recommendation of numerous users. It is supposed to improve fuel mileage slightly. A mix of 128:1 or approx 1 quart per tank for me.

I have been using Powermaster 405 for the last couple of years in both my Dodge and Jetta. Prior to that I used Power Service.

The ULSD is supposed to have sufficient additives to maintain its lubricity but I have added all along for both assurance and quality of fuel issues.

On the newer engines that have either a CAT, DPF or Urea system any additive will soot faster, causing the filter to clog faster.

Some are starting to disable their DPF and CAT.

What are the additives lubricating?
Fuel pump?
Injection system?

I have a '06 Jetta TDI that I have never put an additive in.
Should I be worried?

How much does a quart of two cycle oil cost? Is it worth it?

3 oz. marvel Mystery Oil per tank on each fill up. Lubes the fuel pump and injectors.

I have a friend who runs Diesel Clean in his Dodge Ram and says it has boosted his mileage. I run NOTHING in my duramax as far as additives go. It's a 2003 and since the new ULSD fuel has gone online everywhere my mileage has dropped slightly but not enough for me to start experimenting with my fuel. With that said I only burn a tank of fuel (26 gallons) every 3 weeks.

Had to step away for a day or two so that's why I haven't been on top of the post. But I'm back now.

The engine is a 02 power stroke. I was able to really tell a difference once they changed the fuel. So to me I guess that I can consider that to be a "older engine".

I have thought about doing the ATF but just haven't done it yet.

Cost - I haven't done the math yet but it's a little more expensive than using the power services diesle clean. But are the benefits worth it if any? Still working on that.

I'm no expert at all. But I chat with alot of diesle owners from all models. And from what I gathered, your engine was manufactured for the low sulfer fuel. So you should be fine.

According to this test the Marvel Mystery Oil will cause less lubrication. I would have never thought it because MMO is a great product that has workes miracles for me in the past.

This site also has a multi page discussion about oil/waste oil. Draw your own conclusions but I wouldn't use used oil.

I currently use Diesed Kleen & will be trying 2 stroke oil in the near future.

Do these oil additives cause more black smoke?

Biodiesel has superior upper cylinder lubrication even in solution with regular diesel fuel. Run 5-10% biodiesel. Almost the same cost as normal diesel. Google it.

But they don't sell bio-diesle at every station in town. It can be hard to come by if you don't live or work close to a place that sells it.

All the Shell stations (at least the ones I see) are now selling bio-diesel 20%. Around $4 gallon.

Check the ones in your town.

I use the MPG Caps and Sulfrx. I have an 06 Dodge diesel. The MPG Caps will increase mileage by 25-30%. They will also cut emissions by up to 75%. You can check the later by having an inspection staion in snif you exhaust beofre and after. It takes two to three tanks to get the full benefit. Retest after and see. You can do the math on your mileage. The Sulfrx is designed to give you the lubricants that the low sulfer lost. It will increase the life of your injector pump.

The cost is relatively cheap. I figure I am saving 7.5 gallons per every fill up. At 3.5 a gallon that is $26.25. The caps cost about $4 and a treatment of the Sulfrx is about $2. I can handle saving $20 net per tank. Read through the website. It is very informative and tells you how everything works. The product has been tested by the EPA and approved. That does not mean they endorse it. That means they can find no reason it will hurt your vehicle.

Here's to less money for fuel and more for fishing.

Remeber, that mileage quotes are like fish weights with out a camera phone picture to prove it.... I believe the camera phone has dramtically cut down on the number of 10 lb fish caught every weekend....

enjoy your research..
