finding shad in colder weather?

Well, I'm planning on doing some serious catfishing this winter, and would appreciate any suggestions on locating shad in the colder weather. Haven't had too much difficulty finding & catching bigger live shad for hybrid bait in warm weather, but would like to figure this next part out before it gets too cold ...
If I can't get good at finding them in winter, I may have to resort to catching carp/buffalo for cut bait. Thanks for any suggestions guys! (For what it's worth, I fish Lewisville & Ray Roberts 99.9% of the time.)

For the most part in the Winter the shad will be balled up in deep water possibly off points and humps. Tiny would prob be the man for this question. If you are going to throw for shad in the winter I would recommend getting a heavy cast net or add weights to one and add at least enough rope to get to the bottom. Remember when they are in that deep water you need the net to sink quick, fast and in a hurry! Hope this helps... Ditto... Tiny has alot of info on winter time shad ....and blues...So does BigMick but it's alittle harder to get him to type that much!

I always start off by throwing my net close to tire riefs, boat docks, rocks, bridge pielings, etc. These are things that I believe will help hold bait better because the water temp can be 1/2 to 1 degree warmer near by. I like to think it is because these are things that soak up the sun all day and heat up.
Other than that, I throw the largest net that TX law allows. In the winter time, the more net you can put in the water helps. When it's cold wet and windy, throwing a net again and again, and again isn't fun. Get a big net and get all the bait you need with fewer throws.

Well, my net has a 6' radius - I believe the max in TX is a 7' radius, so thats about as much net as I can throw. Would it be worthwhile to toss crumbled bread by a boatdock or such in deeper water to bait the shad in? I do this in warmer weather & shallower water (say to 15' deep) with some success, but not sure if they'll respond the same in winter & deep water.

Here's one of Tiny's posts on catching shad in the winter with some color sonar pics. Read it, study it, live it . As usual good info from Tiny. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt..._fi#Post2604436
