HELP Engine Dies...

I have a 90 Hp Nissan, and I took my boat out this morning. The last time i took it out was 3 or 4 weeks ago. I noticed it was harder to get started this morning than it has been, ever since I've had it. (I'm bringing this up because it may be related to what happened later) It took me a while, but It started and I went to a couple of different spots. Then, as I was running across the lake, the engine sounded like it started cutting out, or losing power, and just died. I checked a few things out, started it again, it seemed fine, put it in gear and started driving across the lake again. After a while, the same thing happened. And then it started doing it sooner and sooner. I got a tow to shore, and my battery was dead from trying to start so much, so I got a jump and it did the same thing when I tried to make it back to the ramp. I thought it may be something to do with the fuel filter or hoses, getting clogged or dirty. Or something happeneing to where it just burns up the gas in the engine, then is not getting more to it??? I need some help and suggestions. I hope it's nothing more or too serious...

Is your primer bulb going flat when this happens?
Sounds to me like she is starving for fuel, if that is the case, try not to let it run dry too much, remember the engine oil is in the fuel, if your not getting fuel, your engine is not being lubricated....

I would look at the filter first. your description of it running and then cutting out. This sounds like it is pulling debris or trash to the filter and cutting off the fuel supply. I would start with the cheapest fix that you can handle on your own then move on to a dealer to help.

1st what year is the 90? Is it an EFI? Is that the one in the logo pic on you're site? If it is, 1st try disarming the emergency kill switch, they are notorious for doing what you're experiencing. one more thing, are you sure the horn is working?

The filter is what I was thinking, and I was going to check that out today or tommorrow. The primer bulb maintains pressure through all of this...
The motor is a '92, and yes that's it in the picture. Disarm the killswitch? I don't believe it has anything to do with the kill switch. It doesn't shut off immediately anyways. It starts cutting out, and bogging down, and then dies...

A good friend of mine just bought a new motor for his boat for that very same reason. He could not get it to start and kept cranking and cranking. He finally figured out that the fuel pick up line was clogged with debris and cleaned and the motor fired right up. It only lasted through that trip before it took a dump.

I discovered that the fuel line with the bulb was wearing out, and had a small crack in it. I replaced this, hoping that would be the problem. Took her out recently, and the same thing was happening.

Check the vent hole for your gas tank to see if bugs have clogged it up or the vent hole on your gas cap.

I am having the same exact problem on my Evinrude 110. Please let me know if you get this figured out and I will do the same. I have replaced the filter and that did not fix it. Last time I was out noticed that if we kept pumping the primer it would run fine but that is a pain the rear.

Well, I checked a few more things out. It looked like there was no oil, in the lines from the oil injection pump to each of the carburetors, so I bled the lines to get air out of them, and got them all filled back up again, running it a little while. I haven't taken it out on the lake again yet, so I don't know if that was THE problem or not. Regardless, if that was the problem, and more than likely it has something to do with it, I still don't know what was causing. Could be the oil pump is out... More opinions are appreciated. Thanks.
