One of my longtime clients called me up early last week to see if I could squeeze him in for a 1/2 day striper trip on the Brazos later in the week.
Always good to hear from Gavin, so I gladly accomodate him.
Gavin is an accomplished angler and has caught stripers up to 32# and hybrids up to 14 1/2# since he first started fishing with me on the Brazos River in 1995. However, this would be only his second kayak fishing trip with me.
We meet at the put in and I quickly go over the gameplan with him before we head out.
As I gather bait, I come across this little guy in my cast net. I have heard rumors about the Walleye population on the Upper, but this is the first time I have personally seen one in nearly 20 years. I quickly CPR our "Little Legend"
As we arrive our target area, we quickly get the baits out soaking. It does not take long, and the Abu 6500 clicker starts talking to us.
Move over Rover, while Gavin takes over -
After a good tussle, I lip the first fish of the trip. Here is Gavin, as he gets his hands around a quality CPR'd Brazos Striper -
While I tend to the lines, Gavin decides to get out in the yak and bump troll a livey -
While I'm keeping an eye on Gavin, one of my baits gets blasted and now I'm off to the races with a hot striper that highlights the battle by making slashing runs and roiling about on top, shaking it's head violently as it attempts to spit the bait.
Moments later, I also experience the satisfaction of a quality CPR'd Brazos Striper -
As the bite begins to wane, I urge Gavin to switch to my 9.5' light action Noodling outfit spooled with 6 lb line, to see if we can light up a sulking striper.
Soon, Gavin gets a light tackle show from a fiesty striper. Check out the bendo Noodle rod!
Good one, Gavin!
After we CPR our final striper of the afternoon, we load up and begin our paddle to the take out under a setting Texas sun.
All in all, a great trip!
