Gas gauge on my boat is acting up...the right tank reads just fine. When switched over to read the left tank the gauge not only does not read, the needle quickly pegs to the left below the empty mark.....any thoughts? Thanks

Sounds like the fuel sending unit in the tank.

hmmmm...only way to tell is to replace it?

I had a problem with my boat last year. I didn't know if it was the gage or the sender. When I talked to the factory they told me to take it out an move the float up and down with the key on. I never did that for since I had another issue going on (stopped up intake and heat alarm) I took it over to Rockwall Marine and it turned out to be a faulty Mercury fuel gage.

Mine is a single tank with one sender. I don't know about dual tanks and there maybe something with the switch over circuitry. Could be just a loose connection or a stuck float.

Thanks all....are sending units a generic type part ....this is on a 84 Ranger or could this be a dealer item...,,,,?

there might be a company/vendor stamp on the unit when you pull it out. If their not outrageous in price for an 84 I would consider replacing both while your into it.

The sending units are interchangeable. Most opperate on 240ohms/ The only real important part is the depth of the tank. Measure the depth,(or remove it and take it along) visit your local marina and match the sending unit that will work on your depth. The mounting flange is all universal. Hint: When removiing the sender, make a witness mark on the sender and the tank. The mounting holes are not equal spaced and will require you to line the sender up with the screw holes in the tank. Pay attention to this detail. will save you a LOT of time.......
