I got a new curado the other day thiking it was a 7-1 gear ratio bc it said 7 barings, well no it was a 5-1. Well i havent had time to take it back so i just figured i would fish with it while i was at weatherford today and see how i liked it. I was fliping a dock and got a bite and set the hook and my stupid self forgot to tighten the drag, so i didnt get a good hook set. About a 4 pounder shoots out of the water strait at me and of course spits the hook bc my 5-1 reel cant keep up with him to set the hook again. Then later on in the day i set the hook on another fish this time with a good hookset and he runs at me and i cant keep up and he spits the hook too. I would have had a good 10 pounds out of 3 fish if i just would have gotten a 7-1 and wasnt so stupid that i forgot to tighten my drag. Just venting i had fun though

Oh man...the 'ol 'forgot to set the drag' deal. It's happened to me before for sure. As said...keep that reel for your big deep divers that move a lot of water.

i love the 5.1 curado. Own 2 of em. I'll thru any crankbait/spinnerbait or chatter bait on that without hesitation.

Dont get me wrong I also love the 7.1, own 2 of those aswell.

Why would you fish a bait that you want to fish fast on a slow speed reel and baits that you want fish slow on a high speed reel? What am I missing?

I wouldn't ever pitch or flip with a 5.1 reel, hence the reason I own several 7.1 ratio reels.

highplans: the 5.1 is good for big crankbaits because the reel does the work for you.

and a 7.1 is good for pitching so when you set the hook you can turn the fish fast.

Good cranking reel or topwater reel.

I just got a 200DPV, just like the 200DHSV (Curado D), except it is a 5:1 reel. It's great for deep cranking, very smooth and can make long casts, but I prefer a 6.3:1 reel for topwaters, to take up the slack quickly. I also love my 7:1 Curado D reel for pitching and T-rigs. In fact, a 7:1 reel is a necessity for fishing in the hardwoods on Falcon! Gotta have all three! I don't have the new Curado E, but I don't see that I need one.

5:1 used to be considered high speed. I have a Daiwa in my collection from the mid eighties that is 5.18:1 and is labeled "Super High Speed". The old Ambassadeurs that were the high speed versions were 5.3:1.

So let me get this straight.....It's the reel's fault and not operator's head space?
