hi guys would apreciate any advice on a issue i have with a 72 evinrude 100 hp electric shift it worked ok till i pulled the lower unit off and replaced the impeller now it acts like its stuck in forward. should it turn when in nuetral? it will shift to reverse but when i go to nuetral it just starts turning the other way and when i shift to forward i cant feel any change. by the way this is not in the water just running on a water hose and set of ears. any suggestions or tips greatly appreciated

It might turn a little in neutral, from the vibration, depending on how much gas you're giving it...But no it shouldn't be spinning pretty good when in neutral...I don't know the electric shifters very well, but it reads as if you might not have the shifter back in the proper place when putting the lower unit back on...

With the engine off, on outboards without the electric shift, you should be able to place the control in forward and then move the prop clockwise and it should lock so it won't go counter clockwise...In neutral, you should be able to spin the prop freely without hearing any clicks...In reverse you should be able to spin the prop counter clockwise with it locking so it won't go clockwise...

Those old electric shift lower units are complicated. The one you have is normally in forward. Evinrude did this so that if the solenoids or oil pump fails, you would still be able to get home. You need to get a repair manual and check each of the solenoids. If my memory serves me right, one has a blue wire and one has a green wire. No voltage on both is forward, voltage to one (can't remember which one) is neutral, and voltage to both is reverse. It will only shift with the motor running. The solenoids move a shift rod up and down that goes into an oil pump inside the gear housing. The flow of lower unit oil in the pump is what actually does the shifting. Also remember that you have to use a special lower unit oil for these.

Somewhere I have a manual for these. If you can't figure it out, let me know and I will fax a copy of the lower unit section to you.

The tests that LoneStarSon refers to only apply to standard shift lower units and the very early electric shifts. The one on your motor can only be tested in neutral and reverse with the motor running. When the motor is off, the lower unit will be in forward, irrespective of the shift selector button.

rb7764 is right on. The electric shift units are always in forward with key switch off and engine not running. I will almost bet you that you tore the wire apart when you dropped the lower unit, The send wire travels up the exhaust housing and exits just under the powerhead inside the cowling. You didn't say if you disconnected the wiring under the cowling or not. If not, the wire is torn apart. If you did, disconnect, Have you reconnected and if so are you sure they are not reversed, green to blue and blue to green? More information is needed to diagonose properly.

YES!!! That could DEFINIETLY be your problem. You will need to get the right oil from a dealer and refill.

i wonder if you can take a battery and check the electro magnet
, theres also some diodes but you shouldnt have damaged them by just changing pump youve got a bad connection somewhere you are running the engine when you check this right

yes stick ive got it running on a hose when im trying it. it seems to be in forward gear when i start it and wont go to nuetral. whats weird is it worked fine till i changed the impeller but i put the wrong lube back in it. so im thinking it messed up the pump or stopped up the screen to the pump. the lube that goes in it seems alot thinner than most lower unit lubes. it seems a bit more complicated than what i can tackle so i guess its empty the pockets time and take to the shop thanks

If you used an outboard lower unit oil, that should not have messed up anything, The orginal was a Type C lube and the viscosity was a lot thinner. I have used a pure synthetic oil in customers lower units for years now and never had any problems. You need to disconnect the blue/green wire under the cowling and with the key "on", engine running, check the wires from the control box and see if the blue/green wires are activated in each position [for/new/rev]. If not, then you know where the problems lie.
