My alarm is on my boat, I was at lake fork today very rough and was running back to the boat ramp and the alarm started going off. I killed the boat and looked back at the battery and the wires had come off the battery. I don't know how long they had been off but once I put them back on the and turned the key on the alarm kept going off. I turned the motor over and it cranked and everything worked, but I killed it and trolled back to the boat ramp. My question is there anyway that the alarm got stuck and if so is there anyway to bypass it. The motor is 1993 Johonson 88 hp. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not familiar with loose battery cables causing an alarm, but maybe some of the full time mechanics are.

I AM familiar with trimming the engine too high in rough water and it overheating due to insufficient water pickup, thus causing the alarm. It happened to me this summer on a 1980 Evinrude 85 Hp.

I'm sure one of he pros here can tell you about the battery cable/alarm issue, if it does exist.

ON the 88hp models there is only one horn. That being for overheating. There should be no corroliation between the horn staying on and the battery cables coming loose from the battery. The only way that horn could stay on is that the sensor has shorted out. When you look at the wiring diagram for the engine, 12v power goes thru the horn to the sensor. The sensor goes to ground, completeing the circuit. Hense; horn blows.

You may have a blockage of some kind (i.e., grass, etc), your impeller has crapped out or it's an oil pumping issue (does that engine have a VRO?). Other than those three items, I can't think of anything else that could be the prob. When I get in grassy lakes, I start up my engine and throw her in reverse initially to clear the prop and the intake. If it starts up after it cools down and the alarm doesn't sound off right away, then you may be suffering from these issues.
