Sorry to post such gross pictures, but I'd like everyone to see what I saw tonight. I wouldn't be suprised if the whole population of redfish was wiped clean. It's really a shame to see this happen and I hope we are able to find out what happened. I have 63 pictures of groups of dead fish washed up on the shore and in the reeds. I would estimate numbers in the thousands. There were also alot of bass, shad, and sunfish but it looked like the reds were hit the worst. The two fish in the close up would have rivaled the state record in my oppinion. In comparison the sunfish there with them are the hand sized fish fairfield state park lake was famous for frown

Damn that sucks--wonder if it had to do with the water they were pumping in from the Trinity?

didnt see a frog. tons of shad washed up on the dam though. i didnt see any catfish either.i never knew the lake had that many redfish in it. not to mention im sure we only saw a percentage of what actually died. the dam was littered with skeletons from one end to the other and pretty much solid dead fish all the way around the banks of the cove nearest the spillway. It STUNK.

that is terrible, almost as bad as the golden alge blooms that defestated the Brazos River system in the past years. really need to find out the problem there.

this is awful, tragic ...even though I only fished there once, I considered it a special place, I hope that any remaining population (if any) can somehow recover, it looks like its changed for a long long time

IF THEY COULD USE SOME BOATS AND MANPOWER TO HELP GET THIS CLEANED UP, HOW MANY OF US CAN VOLUNTEER FOR THIS WEEKEND?

I don't know if we could help in anyway. This is NOT a call to action, yet, but could we respond if our boats and we could help? If you want to lineup, send me an email @millerd1_airmail_net@yahoo.com with and email address and contact information that can work tomorrow daytime.

What a shame I hope they get a handle on that situation before it's too late if it's not already.

Man, that is crazy!!! Wonder what happened? Whatever it was has probably contaminated the whole lake. Hope some reds make it......

Hope someone finds out what happened!

What was the last day the plant generated? Would be interesting to take some oxygen readings around that area if someone had one of the old O2 units that fishermen use to be able to buy to help them find high O2 content water. Not seeing any catfish would support the lack of O2 - they can survive a very minimal oxygen event long enough to move out of the affected area.

Strange that no hybrid stripers were identified.

It almost appears like a rotenone event that's sometimes used to rid lakes of unwanted species but I doubt very seriously the TP&W would authorize anything of that nature.

The red in the center of the 2nd picture looks bigger than the two in the close up. The buzzards look ready to help with the clean-up.

Tradinghouse redfish population almost gone and now Fairfield. A crying shame for sure.

Redfin,
Fairfield hasn't had any real populations of hybrids in a few years.

I'm sad this had to happen and I am truly lost for words for the fisherman that fishes this lake. Hope the lake recovers well.

It would appear that some chemical (sulfuric acid or caustic soda are the two most common chems for water treatment going into the boilers) may have leaked from the power plant. I hope the answer comes out soon!

That sounds a lot more logical, Bob. I understand the plant was shut down for a period of time (planned or unplanned, I don't know). Only water samples will tell.
