Hey guys,

I have a 88' Bass tracker with a Mercury 150 XR-4. The problem is that when I trim/tilt the motor up it instantly starts to lower. Not real fast, but fast enough to see it moving. It appears to be getting worse. There is no sign of a hydraulic leak. My father-in-law and I made sure it was bled. He thinks it is a check valve leak/problem.

What do y'all think the problem is? I found a check valve assembly kit for $50. This is a lot cheaper than replacing the entire tilt/trim as the mechanic told me to do for $350-$400+ labor.

The check valve kit may or may not work. I have an 85 175 that did this when new though a little slower. Took it in twice under warranty and and never got it fixed. I learned to live with it. I went through 2 rebuilt motors before finally breaking down and buying a new one. I installed the new one and have not had a problem since.

im having the same problem with my 150 please some body help!

Anybody else have some input? Now there are two of us with the same problem.

check the manual release screw when you said bled does that mean you adde fluid or something along that line if so you have to run it up and down many times to bleed the air out of the system and keep checking the fluid level

According to the maintenance manual The first step in bleeding is to check the fluid and add if necessary. We checked the fluid and it was definitely full.

Also, the manual said to trim the motor up to the end of the trim rods and press down and ensure the trim rods do not retract more than an 1/8 of an inch. If so it needed to be bled. We tried this before and after opening the the fill screw. It never showed signs of needing to be bled. So we stopped that process since the manual said to only continue if the fluid was low.

stick is right--the manual release and bled screws are on opposite sides..if you haven't already, make sure both are tight

Where is the manual release screw located?

When you are standing at the back of the boat, looking at the engine ,the manual release screw is located on the right of the power trim unit, through a hole about 3/4 of inch in diameter ..
has a flat blade screw driver head/screw

Trimed my motor all the way up when i was pulling it out of the water and now it wont go down. When i hit the trim down you just hear the click but the motor dosent moves. Can you give me some advice? Thanks

Take my word on it! Best to change out the t&t unit. Have been though this several times and will be cheaper in the long run. I will check the unit like kingdad101 says but if that does`nt work change it. SnowBall you have a bad relay or connection. Good Luck

Snowball, your problem is likely a bad wire or relay. It is a easy fix.

Do i gotta take the trim motor out to get to the relays? Where are the relays loctaed?

Relays are under the cowling on the starboard or drivers side.
