Heres there statement:CPS Energy is closing down a section of Calaveras Lake next week in order to proceed with the construction of two bridges that will lead in and out of the utilitys power plants.
The area of the lake surrounding the northern portion of West Arm Island will be closed to the public over the next 24 months as crews build the bridges across the lake. Crews will also place a 600-foot-long buoy line to mark off the boundary of the construction zone. Lights on the buoy line will make it visible to boaters in the evenings.
The majority of the lake area will remain open to the public during bridge construction.
Public safety is at the heart of this project that will move heavy truck and other vehicular traffic off county roads near Calaveras Lake to a new and larger plant entrance on U.S. Highway 181, says Eric Olson, CPS Energy civil and structural engineering manager. Currently theres a lot of traffic along Gardner and Sulphur Springs roads, an area that has seen a lot of development, including two new schools and a new subdivision.
The recreational facilities and amenities at Calaveras Lake are operated by San Antonio River Authority through an agreement with CPS Energy. The lake has picnic and camping areas, boat ramps, piers and shorelines for fishing. CPS Energy created the lake in the 1960s to supply cooling water to its power plants.
