Does anyone know of a place that sells a peach color, or will I have to mix the paints to get what I want? My brother wants a peach colored jig.

I know they sell that color of paint but didn't know if regular acrylic or whatever would hold up. The true jig paint seems to handle wear and tear a bit better I think. It is much thicker, and coats very well. I have not tried the powder paints yet, but hear good things about them. Thanks for the idea though, I may mix it with some white jig paint and see what happens, if need be.

Thanks Mike for the link. Yes, I think Barlow's is a good idea, if I want to order the stuff...but I don't see peach. I could try to mix it, or I could just use a mix of acrylic....or as Big Dale said, just use peach fingernail polish. I will have to think it over on what would be the best. Fingernail polish is the cheapest easiest way to go, but I wonder about chipping.

Sally Hansen's will work. AND Little bitty cans of Rustoleum mixed to a peach color will also work but needs to dry overnight. I forget the color combo to get peach because I did it accidentally one evening and painted some flounder jigs with it. Held up well and worked. Mix a spoon full at a time till you get it right.

Kelly: If you are worried about chip-resistance I can think of a few options. 1. An additional coat of clear Loons Hard Head cut 50% with rubbing alcohol. This stuff is kind of expensive at 6.95 a bottle but it sure looks great.
2. A top coat of Sallys Hard As Nails.
3. A top coat of the jig head dipped in polyeurathane such as min- wax. This takes at least overnight to dry and then you have to get rid of the excess that has now closed the eye of the hook. Michael used to do his Cap Spiders that way butt it is a pain in the butt to get it out of the eye of the hook. He would pick it out with a dubbing needle, or I found a method that is a lot more fun. I simply fire up the ole alcohol lamp and burn it out with a dubbing needle that has been heated red hot. This method does allow you when teaching kids to tie flys to not only play with dead animal parts, but also teach them to PLAY WITH FIRE.
I guess now you can see why many mothers do not know whether to trust me to play with their kids.
Of these simple ways I would suspect that using the overcoat of Sallys Hard As Nails would be cheapest and easiest, but sometimes it is fun to play with fire.
Have fun with this stuff.

Thanks for your wonderful ideas, guys! I found a bottle of Sally's Hard As Nails that must be close to the color my brother described. I am going to get started before long. I think I will see how the Sally's product works first, and then if that chips too bad, I will take more drastic measures. I will let my brother test them out and tell me how it works...I will save a few for myself and do the same...hehehe.

LOL Now we just gotta mix in some firearms and the kids will be learning all the important stuff. speaking of which i am going on my virgin dove hunt tomorrow. i wonder if i should save some feathers. i saved my first pheasant and chukkar... i know bret was tying some sucker punches with dove feathers that were loose around his yard. i think i already threw out the borax though.

Well I had a couple of jigs with white heads and red eyes. I thought I would try my peach nail polish out on it last night, just to see what happened. I was disappointed as the color was almost translucent...it did not get dark enough. I bought some 1/32 oz ball jig heads this morn, and I am gonna try it right on the silver head. I have my doubts now as to whether it will work. If not, on to plan b, whichever one that is.

Wow guys!!!!! so much to respond to.
1) Robin: Friend Dana Griffin of Gainsville , Florida uses an empty 45 case to cut out little discs of foam to use in some of his foam flies. Not realy a gun, but it does put those kind of ideas in their heads.
When I was given a huge box full of tying materials, I kept the lone round of 12 gauge 00 buck that was in the box before I gave the rest of the stuff to Mitch. Is that getting closer.
2) Long Haired Dave: All I could come up with is that some dove feathers might be useful for tying small soft hackle flies. Might be useful on the Norfolk River. Scratch that, since I know how you feel about trouts, but you might use them for brim.
3) Kelly: You could also mix a few drops of your fingernail polish along with some glitter in a small batch of epoxy...just add a few drops of the fingernail polish till you get it the color you want. This would also bullet proof the jig head so it will last longer as it is banged on rocks.

Big Dale, thanks for the hints. I am considering my options. I have more storm preparation to do. I have to bath the dogs before the storm hits. I just hope I don't have to put them in crates and leave for the storm. I don't have a crate for my mastiff, because the crates for her run well over a hundred bucks...anyway, in case we have to leave, they will hopefully be nice and clean.

Well the jigs are just now completed. I hope it is the color my brother had hoped for, and that he is pleased with them. They will catch fish regardless. I also made about 4 each for my son, and I....hehehe. That is the most I have ever tied in one day. Jigs are easier to tie than flies to me. What I did is get a paint pen, and I had another color of peach. Then I topped it off with another coat of Sally's clear. My fingers are crossed it is the color he wanted. If not, he can buy the color, and then I will make his jigs...LOL.

I have not tried the powder paints yet, but hear good things about them. The big problem with powder is filling the eye. I heat and dip one at a time. The best way to prevent that problem is to hold the jig with stats on the eye. A little cleanup is necessary, but not as much if dipped from the shank. Heating time requires a learning curve. You'll have to apply some post-dip heat sometimes. I never bothered with the post dip cure. Apart from casting the jig into conrete, the base dip is fairly strong.

I used powder paint jig heads & after heating 5-8 seconds then swish them thru the powder, I hang them on old wire rack, remove paint from eye (if any) with needle & bake at 300 for 15 minutes...there is a small learning curve with right amount of heat and keeping powder loose & fluffy...but you can't beat the finish & with a few creative sprinkles & metallics you can get some interesting finishes

That sounds like fun. I asked at the local fishing store, but they did not have any jig paint, powdered, or otherwise. So I had to make do. I think my brother should be pleased. They came out pretty good, not fantastic, but decent.

Mike, that sounds like they must look really professional when you go through all that. I need to try it, and using something to cover the eye will certainly help. I hate it when hook eyes have paint in them. Thanks guys for all the hints.

I ended up being too lazy at the end of the day, and covered in sweat, to set aside some dove feathers. But yeah, there'd be plenty of soft hackle stuff on there which would be fun for trout, brim, or carp anyway...
