Any one ever fished the Gallatin in Montana? Going to be in West Yellowstone/Yellowstone Park 10/12-10/19. I found a book about the area fishing but it was published in the early eighties. Got a few weeks till then so any fresh brain I could pick on would be great. food

Derik,

Was there about 3 weeks ago. Best fishing was in the Park South of Big Sky and North of West Yellowstone. Open meadows were best using small drys (PMD,BWO) and small nymphs (size 16-18 Prince). Most of the trout were 12-16" but fun to stalk.

Drop me a line (dwwright61@gmail.com) for other good areas as I've fished around Yellowstone for over 30 years.

I never have fished the Gallatin, but have fished other Western Montana rivers a LOT. In the fall the only big nymphs I've ever had much luck with are the October caddis that start showing up soon. I'm with Pulp about the small dries. Some of my best fishing has been on tricos in Sept. They're so small and my eyesight not being what it used to be, I fish them behind a larger dry and strike anytime I see a splash near the larger fly. Hopper-dropper rigs are good this time of year with the dropper being a small prince. Also take some ant patterns. Sometimes they'll save the day.

During that time frame the Madison in the park could be having the browns doing their spawning run thing.

Check with the good folks at Blue Ribbon Anglers in West Yellowstone. I have been a happy customer of theirs for many, many years now. They will stear you toward what is fishing best and with which flies in their area. Craig Matthews and his wife Jackie have been doing this for about 30 years now and he has written several books about fishing the area and tying flies for that fishing. They are good folks and you will enjoy doing business with them. Be prepared to spend a few bucks in their shop as it is one of the best shops in the country.

Depends. It is not unusual for them to have snow by the first part of October. It sure is a great time of the year to catch the fall beauty.

Derick I live in Lubbock, but am from that country there. It is famous for the cutthroat. I may want to go with you. There is a free fishing day in New Mexico on the 27th of September, which I go to Bonito Lake and catch brooks and rainbows for free. There is this lake near my farm there in Wyoming Lake Desmet where 30lb Browns have been seen skimming the surface, by myself. I think your best bet is like the other guy said party when you can. Remember Wyoming has a free fishing day too.
