Calaveras would probably be your best bet as far as finding access and shade.
It will usually be crowded on the weekend so prime spots with shade and close access to the waters edge, are sometimes hard to find unless you're just lucky or get there early.
I'd recommend a castnet to catch your own bait or take your own, and don't plan on buying any at the lake concession because they've for what ever reason, decided not to provide that service anymore.
You can still buy bait outside the gate at the lighthouse convenience store/gas station, on the corner of stewart road which runs south of the main gate to the lake where it intersects with 1604 about a mile or so from the gate.
Look at the fishing reports section under Calaveras report, and see what a first time user did on his maiden trip, but he did have a canoe.
Don't get too discouraged if the fishing is a little tough because this isn't the best time of year to find the fish up shallow with the high temps.
Early or late in the day would be the best, and during the day any type of shade or vegetation will probably hold some fish.
Hope this helps!
