It seems there is a growing portion of kids who cannot understand their actions have real meaning. It's not like what they see in the shows and movies that they are plopped in front of at a young age.
We shield our children when their loved ones and pets pass on...I went to my first funeral at age 5. I was there to see my Great Aunt Opal and to say goodbye...I remember it to this day. I still have the little blue suit I wore in a drawer. I have since buried over 40 friends and family members in the 28 years that have since passed.
When I was working in children's ministry, I had a parent talking to me about how angry and violent his children seemed to be towards one another...The kids were always very sweet and loving towards me and most in the church, but towards each other it was a different story...I asked him if they played video games and of course the answer was yes...There favorite at the time was the 007 series for Nintendo...I bought them an old Atari 2600 and gave them several different games to play...He took away the other game and said within a couple of weeks it was remarkable how much they had calmed down...While games/movies/special effects have become more realistic, they have desensitized our kids to the realities of the world....
We need to get rid of the game systems and kick our kids outside to play...We need to get auto shop, wood shop, metal shop, etc. reinstated in our schools...Keep their hands and minds busy and teach them that all tools, including guns (they are a tool), can be dangerous when handled improperly and with the wrong intentions...
