I want a new computer. Can't afford it but I want it.

I have hear nothing but bad news about Vista. Wondering if Microsoft has patched it enough to make it civilized.

My concern is that it does not support some of the programs that I run.

I know there are other choices; Mac, unix, or xp. But I dont know if Mac will support at least one program I use all the time.

Any comments on Vista?

Keep the old computer. Dump the dialup and spend your money on a faster connection.

What is the program you need for Windows?

A faster pc will not seep up your internet, It will only speed up things running on the PC itself. I am not a Vista user but with XP you can run a program in a previous OS or in 16 or 32 bit mode and I would thing that Vista would have the same option.

I do two things on a computer yahoo chat and TFF

Yahoo companion program is Ytunnellpro.com which give me more control of the content of yahoo.
It is not compatible on Vista.
I also play music on Yahoo Chat which Vista does not support.

If you just chat and come here, what you really need is a faster connection. Check out pandora.com for music over the Internet.

I have a laptop with Vista, it has 4gb RAM....it runs ok, don't like it, but it runs. I dual booted it with Linux, so, when I'm not feeling like running Micro$oft, I use Linux.

You can play music on Yahoo chat. Vista does support it. I'm listening to country on it right now.
Vista supports alot more than you think it does. I have not had many problems with it. The only thing I could not get to work was a few games for my kid and the Lowrance demo. Lowrance is upgrading there system and it will work soon with Vista.

Vista still have alot of bugs in it. This is the reason why we are still running XP at our company. Give it 1-2 years and Vista will be bug proof.

I agree it may have some bugs to get worked out but I have not ran across very many and I use mine for business. Hasn't it been out for two years already?

They did a test with a bunch a people that said they did not like vista and vista was not good for anything. What they did was let them use a computer with a new program that was better than vista and all of them was very impressed and loved it. Later they found out it was vista. This was on the Microsoft website a while back so the test could be tainted.LOL

I actually thoroughly enjoy Vista now. I have the 32 bit Ultimate version. I started with just 2 gigs of RAM and it was still slow. I'm up to 8 gigs now and it's just fine. My performance score is 5.8. I've had it for about a year now and I actually think it has crashed LESS than my XP Pro box has in the past year (yes, it still crashes... it IS Microsoft afterall).

GP,

I don't see why Mac OS X would not support what you do just fine.

I think Dell is was the last company that gave you the option of getting XP on a new pc and now they have went to Vista as well. Just make sure that what ever you get and you want to go to XP that you can get the drivers for it.

The way it was said, makes it sound like XP is bug proof and Vista will be as well. Chill.

I've had Vista since March on a new HP with 4GB ram and a quad core processor and no problems. As much as I hated the security control (yes I know I can over-ride it), it hasn't given me any reason to. I was also able to re-load a few Win 2000 programs and they ran fine. So, I am fine with it. I let the Windows Defender run and update it regularly and also run Kaspersky anti-virus. You don't even know it is there. I use all Microsoft Office applications, Engineering CAD and some Music software and no problems........so far...............
