Have xp on two desk tops and vista on my lap top love vista and have had zero problems, can't wait to get all my computers on vista. I think the problems with vista now is people don't want anything different. Love vista handling of pictures much better than xp.

Getting proper drivers can be an issue. You definetly have to know where to look. But most stuff operates in the same manner. The 32bit version is a bit more friendly. I personally think it is a good OS, visually stunning, and more secure. It is just really ahead of the hardware available. I didn't like how Microsoft dumped it on the users to debug it for them either. It is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

Not to be critical or anything, but isn't 4 GB the max amount of ram that 32 bit Vista supports? You'd have to be using 64 bit Vista to notice a difference. I could be wrong, but it's something you might want to look into.

I guess maybe I don't have the 32 bit version then? Vista clearly shows it as something like 8190MB of RAM. I'll have to double-check when I get home. You are correct on the performance aspect, though. I don't really see much of a difference between 4GB and 8GB. My benchmark tools show a difference, but my eye can't see it. I got a sweet deal on the RAM, though. It was only $15 more to double it up to the 8GB. At that point, it was more of a "why the hell not" type of thing.

I read in an industrial trade magazine that Microsoft is working on the next operating system called 7(?). The name has a 7 in it anyway. The supposition is that it will blow Vista away on performance. Guess its a Vista with all he bugs fixed and a lot more. Don't remember that much about the article, just something I read while sitting on the throne.
The Dell Desk Top I have is comletely adequate and rally not much wrong with it. I surely do need to upgrade to a satellite or a Broadband Air card to elevate the speed and considerably lessen my frustration.

I am using a $500 desk top with 80 gb hard drive and 512 gb memory on dial up. Got a few glitches after three years of hard use and slower than the seven year itch.

Me upgrading to a laptop is like you guys paying $300 for a fishing pole. What I have works, but I want something better.

The last brochure I got from Dell shows a laptop with a 3GB memory, 160 GM harddrive, dual core processor (dont know what that is but it sound good), cd/dvd creator and player,Vista Home Premium, SP1, bult in web cam, and a flip 30 minute video camcorder for $700.

For $1100 I can go to 3GB memory and 320 GB hard drive (also include a verizon aircard).

For $1200 It goes up to a 4GB memory and 320 Gb harddrive

I donot know hw that compares to Mac, but I am going to research them next.

Get a Mac if all you do is web browsing and chatting. Superior hardware and OS.

+1.

I was concerned about Vista when I bought my laptop but that is what it came with. I have not been disappointed. Other than the week and a half boot up time, it has been stable.

It is a memory hog....two Megs minimum, but I would not be concerned about using it. If you have old peripherals, you might have to download drivers....

I have several computers running XP and have had no problems. I'm not a Microsoft hater, so I'm always anxious to use their new stuff. I have two computers running Vista. I would bring one serious problem to everyone's attention. One of the two Vista machines was running great (about two months old), everything working properly, then two weeks ago my printer no longer works. You get a "print spooler failure" message, when you try to print.
There seems to be no fix for this. Microsoft is well aware of the problem, but have not made a fix.

You can "google" Vista print spooler problem" and see the discussions about it. It has nothing to do with the make of printer. It's a Vista problem. My other Vista machine works great so far.

Go to Dell's outlet site. They have some good deals, and may even still have a few refurb machines with XP on it. These have the same warranty as a new PC. I've had a Optiplex for over 3 years with absolutely no problems, and just bought a new Inspirion 530. It was a little over $600 dollars including tax and shipping.

2.66 ghz Core2 duo
320gB HD
4GB ram
512mb Video Card
dual dvd burner
Vista Home Ultimate
NIC card
and a bunch of other bloatware that I have already deleted.

I meant to tell you that you might download CCleaner and install it and run it. It'll get most PCs running a lot faster. It cleans out all of the temp files, and straightens out your registry. It could just be that you are still using POS dial up.
