Hello all, I need some feedback. I was out at Lake Fairfield this weekend in search of some of those big gills and I got some pretty interesting advice thrown my way and I just wanted you all to tell me whatcha think. I was using those big black crickets that I actually caught. Some of the locals saw my crickets and immediately told me that the fish would not bite them for the blue gills in that lake preferred the grey crickets. I had another local tell me that they would mostly bite only the white crickets and then of course another person told me that I should use brown crickets. In each case, they were certain that those fish would not bite my black crickets. I will say that I did catch quite a few big blue gills on those black crickets early in the morning but then they just stopped. I started using night crawlers coupled with the crickets and I saw that the fish were taking the worm off only and would leave the cricket in perfect form(untouched). I couldn't make sense of this. I was left feeling that maybe there was something to what the locals were saying. Maybe those fish are specific to the color cricket that you use. I was hoping that you all could shine some light on the matter because I am looking to go back this weekend and if I need to change the cricket color then that is what I will do....Any feedback is much appreciated!

Well, isn't obvious that black crickets is a breakfast food for bluegills. Like, what self respecting bluegill would eat a breakfast cricket after brunch?

Do you own research,
Get all color crickets, and setup a spider rig system with different cricket on each pole.
Let us know the results

Why are you trying to judge crickets by the color of their exoskeleton?

Why are you trying to judge crickets by the color of their exoskeleton? HAHAHA That's greatness. Catch the black ones and spray paint them what ever color you would like. Just kidding.....Seriously though, I have caught way more BGs on brown crickets than any other color.... I think they're more tender.

Doesn't really matter. Tan/brown farm raised crickets are used for reptiles and such b/c they have a softer exoskeleton and a better meat to shell ratio, which in turn may make the fish like them better.
But, I like to use what I find in they're natural environment. Which is normally a black cricket or a grasshopper. That is when I fish for cats though, normally don't go through the trouble of crickets for bluegill.
Not really any white crickets, that would just be a molting cricket.
