Back in my day, the drinking age was 19. I thought that was a good age limit. I have never understood why college aged kids should not be able to drink legally. I also agree with the sentiments that if you are old enough to die for your country, you should be able to drink legally. But, I also agree that special treatment should not be given to the military. That really makes no sense.

I wouldn't consider it "special" treatment. I would consider it an earned privilege.

I personally don't think most people have their "stuff" together until they're 25 or so. Even then, there's exceptions.......drinking age should be 25.

Just b/c you are not active military doesn't mean you are not draft eligible. That is the point that is trying to be made. Most of the people I know that went into the military were b/c they were unsuccessful with life. That doesn't mean they didn't make good soldiers but they didn't have the maturity to attempt life without guidance.
Just so you know I have never been in the military and I regret it often. I let my mother and uncle talk me out of joining the Marines in order to attend college. I guess you never met anyone who was supremely effected by 9/11. Anyone that lets someone "talk them out of" joining the military is just looking for an excuse not to go.

I wouldn't consider it "special" treatment. I would consider it an earned privilege. Earned? No, they get paid money for their service. They earn the privilege to have their higher education paid for; not to drink legally.

If you legalize it, there will be even MORE drunk teens driving around. Sure teens already drink, but they have to go out of their way to get it, if you make it easy, it will be hell out on the streets with even more drunks driving around.

I wouldn't consider it "special" treatment. I would consider it an earned privilege. Earned? No, they get paid money for their service. They earn the privilege to have their higher education paid for; not to drink legally. They also "earn" the right to a military pension for wounds suffered in combat. They also "earn" free treatment at VA hospitals for being exposed to things like Agent Orange. They "Earn" the right to a military funeral. They "Earn" the right to wake up at night in cold sweats due to PTSD. There are lots of things they "Earn" that you would not understand.

The question is at what age are we old enough to act responsible? We are giving mixed signals, 18 to sign a contract, 18 to vote, 18 to join the military, 18 to be tried as an adult[in most cases], but 21 to order a beer. If we are responsible at 18, it ought to be for everything, if we are responsible at 21, it ought to be for everything! Which is it?

Which is a very good point. How can someone be "mature" enough at 18 to vote for president, but not be "mature" enough to have a beer? Which again, is the reason that I believe at the age of 18, those who are willing to put their life on the line for their country, should have "earned" all rights associated with adulthood.

Nah, I think it should be about....50....unless you are in the military.... Too many drunks out on the roads at night.
Back several years ago, I read a study once that said that over 50% of the people out past 2AM, driving private autos, are legally drunk....I believe it. Heck, I've seen plenty of drunks out on the road between 3-5AM when travelling to fish.

What about someone who is 17 or 18 years old who gets a private pilot license but is a civilian? That certainly shows a level of maturity and responsibility. Should they get to drink alcohol?

Interesting the responses.
In an ideal world everything 'adult' should be 18; voting, drinking, driving, contracts, joining the military etc.
This approach of course would require being responsible for the consequenses of our own actions. Something too many in this country have sadly forgotten how to do.

But I don't understand why an 18 year-old kid in the military should have the right to drink, but a kid in college should not. Again, I think the age should be 19 for everyone.

Where have I heard that age before? Could it be the U.S. Constitution, where one has to have reached his/her 25th birthday to get elected to the USHOR, or perhaps that's the age when insurance rates drop. Darn those actuaries. Naw, now I remember it was several human development studies that showed that the development of the male human brain is not complete till about age 24. TFP

I think they should keep it at 21, but make an exception for active duty military. You can drink on any military post as long as you have an I D card and are at least 18. However you can not drink in the local bars--I don't have a problem with this at all. In a war zone or overseas there is no min age.
