Last night about 7:00 I went to Chase Oaks Golf Course to see if the fish would cooperate. I rigged up my rod at the truck with a popper and went to one of the water hazards. I took the popper off the hook keeper on my rod and put it in the water while I stripped line off my reel in order to cast. All of a sudden I heard "KER SPLOOSH"!! I looked down and saw my popper had disappeared and my line was tightening. I set the hook and pulled in a nice 1 1/2# bass. In all my years of fishing I have never caught a fish that quickly and before I even stripped line off my reel. Fishing is full of exciting experiences!! I caught one other bass on a popper, and that was it. I had gone there about 1:00 in the afternoon (they are closed on Monday) and fished the big lake next to 75 and caught one 1 1/2# bass, two 6" ones and one 6" crappie. I had a black wooly bugger on and saw a carp feeding next to the shore (I know that he was feeding because the table was set, he had a napkin in his lap and was holding a knife and fork in his fins). I threw my fly right in front of his nose and the nasty trash fish just turned up his nose and swam away!!!! Can you imagine that!!!!! That worthless trash fish had no idea what an honor it would have been for him to be on my line and let me catch him!! I'll be damned if I'll ever lower myself to cast to another of those trash fish.!!!! Screw carp!!!

Yes if it was a grass carp, that would explain it.

Howdy - new to the board, new to the area. Wondering if anyone has fly fished the pond at Russell Creek Park in Plano. It's damned near walking distance from my house and I'm wondering if it'd be worthwhile to take a new popper or two out there some morning before work or some evening to leave the drama behind for an hour. Anyone know what's in there or if it's worthwhile?
Many thanks, Jack

Fished the pond twice, most recent was yesterday - see link below. Caught Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bass.
A popper should catch'em. Good luck!

Nice - thanks for the reply and the blog. Very cool. I'm going to try some popper and deer hair patterns down there this week.

Try smaller flies for the bass, like a #10 wooly bugger or clouser, or small poppers. The bass there don't get much bigger than 1#. For bluegill use trout nymphs or foam spiders. If you notice that your line is not shooting through the guides the way it should and your hands seem sticky, it is from the Johnson Grass seeds that are all along the edge of the lake in the new "Conservation Buffer Zone".If your line and rod get sticky be sure to clean your line and rod when you get home, soap and water will take it right off.

Great advice - much appreciated. Guess it'd be nice if I had a 3-wt rod, and could cast worth a damn. Oh well... I'll go out there this week and see what happens. Thanks again.
