The one thing that has always stood out in my mind about Fork has to do with tournament fishing. Being a tournament angler you go to so many lakes and you put in so much time practicing and fishing for a limit of fish. Then you go to Fork and I can't tell you how many times I have made the comment to a buddy something like "Man where was this fish last weekend?" Or, "Wow what if we had these five fish on Cedar Creek last month."
When you tournament fish lakes all over Texas the one thing that stands out is that with time on the lake the majority of the time the quality of fish you catch is just a lot better than on your regular tournament lakes. You don't catch fish all of the time but when you do you will have statements pop into your head like, "These five fish would have won the Media tournament on Tawakoni yesterday."
Maybe comparing Fork with some of it's legendary reputations might be tough but when comparing it with other lakes in this part of Texas it is a no brainer. It is The Lake.

It will humble you and it will reward you . Started fishing Fork in '91 and still fish it today . I have caught 2 double digit fish in Fork and quite a few smaller . But if you catch the fish of a lifetime you keep going back time after time trying to catch another . On Fork is the only place in this neck of the woods that you may be able to do it . So keep trying and it just could happen to you . PB - 16.12 lbs.

I fully agree with all that say Fork is dead and no one should fish it..............less traffic for me.............
Fork can be tough-it has been for me the last couple of short trips I have taken over the last 2 weeks, but I am basing that on the 50 plus day I had a couple of weeks ago. August is tough on Fork but isn't August tough on any Lake.

Someone touched on it earlier, but Fork DID get LMBV about the same time period you are talking about...5 or 6 yeas ago, I'm not exactly sure. Couple in with that a decline in grass and summers of severe drought, I can see where you think this way. With that being said, I have noticed every year since that the grass is growing thicker and the slot fish on average have been heavier. It just takes time for the lake to recover from these factors. Then, if you want to add in the "explosion" of our sport in the past 5-10 years, and public forums like this one talking about such a famed lake, then yes, the addded fishing pressure only makes the rebound take longer. I was not lucky enough to fish the lake back in the "hey-day", but short of making a drive 10 hours south, it IS by far my first choice.

yes I was fishing it during that time. Really sad. Then a rumor started saying that about X number of fish died then later somebody else said that 10x the number of fish quoted had actually died. It's a huge conspiracy!

taoy, really catch a 16? That is an unbelievable fish, must have really got your heart pounding. I've fished Fork since the early 80s and have yet to record a double digit but I know I will on my next trip or so I've been saying for 25 years now.

I just got off the fisheries web site. From the looks of the share lunker entries, Fork had its legendary days, but by no means is it a has been when it comes to producing true giants.

I guess that's my problem. I don't enjoy getting a couple of bites per day fishing for "educated" fish as much as a lot of guys apparently do. I prefer to CATCH a bunch of dumb fish.

I may not be as "validated" as I would if I went to Fork, fought the crowds, and came back to the ramp able to brag about how I outsmarted the one to three fish that I was able to catch in my seven or eight hours on the lake...but I guess I am willing to sacrifice that feeling of accomplishment in exchange for going somewhere else where I can actually get a lot of bites and catch a bunch of fish.

Some folks just enjoy a challege more than others, I suppose.

LOL.

Thats right "soonerjake" , she is number 17 on the Texas top 50 . Its a feeling every bass fisherman wants to feel . When they break the surface the first time its the realization that what you have wanted to happen your whole fishing life has happened and you say please let me catch this one . I try to tell people what it feels like and the words to describe it are hard to come by . Where she was at you would have never thought she would have been . That one spot that I threw to ( just threw it out there ) she was there . To say it was great doesn't even come close . I didn't go to sleep until early the next morning . I caught her over and over again in my mind . I guess just savoring the moment . Anyway thats what all these guys on this web site think about when you go to The great LAKE FORK .

No disrespect intended...but I think this post illustrates the difference between the way Lake Fork is viewed by people from up north who have been coming down here for years, as opposed to East Texas fishermen.

If I live in Wisconsin or North Dakota, and I'm not used to catching a bunch of big largemouth bass, I am probably going to be satisfied with going out on Lake Fork and catching a few fish here and there. The fact that I am also probably more likely to hire a guide for my once-a-year trip probably doesn't hurt, nor does the fact that I am fishing in 60-80 degree weather as opposed to the 20-35 degree cold and snow cover that I left to come down.

On the other hand, with all the quality bass lakes we have in East Texas...I think some of us have higher expectations for our fishing trips. Unless I am focusing on finding a needle in the proverbial haystack and catching a ShareLunker, why would I want to go to Fork and catch a handful or less of fish in a day when I can go to Pines...or Athens...or Nacogdoches...or any number of other East Texas lakes and probably catch two to five times as many fish. Plus, those lakes have plenty of big fish in them, too.

This is just my (probably) uninformed opinion, but I think out-of-staters who come down to experience the "Legend of Lake Fork" are the people who are keeping some of those businesses that are still operating out there afloat.

They are probably more satisfied with going out and catching three fish on Lake Fork than, let's say, someone who drives over from Longview or Tyler. Plus, if they have a bad few days of fishing they might just think it is an anomoly...while the East Texas guy who has been fishing the lake numerous times per year for several years with less than spectacular results begins to become disillusioned with fishing this once great body of water and decides to go elsewhere, to what he considers better choices for his recreation dollar.

Yep, March 22, 2002. I kept his fish for a pet for almost a year, when we got it from TPW it was 18.69 and was 20.51 when it left our tank bound for Houston.

What a great fish taoy. Broke off four times one morning back in the day on Wolfe Creek point. Got to see two of them. One was an absolute monster. I still see that fish in my dreams. Oh well, I know I am only one cast away from one even bigger. Used to catch really good fish on the timbered point on the left going into Wolf. Always try it when I am at the lake just to pay homage to that big girl that broke my heart but I just can't find 'em there any more. havn't in about eight years. Don't know if the grass left or what but it seems like it sure doesn't hold fish like it use to. Any one else share the same feeling?

Yeah, it's always funny how we get these one or two guys that are right now matter what anyone says. But like I said originally, I wish more people hated Fork and would stay away. Maybe the fish would loosen up for awhile. It's been nice to go to other lakes the past year and get on spots when you want to.

I got to fish every spot I wanted to...The lake isn't receiving any pressure whatsoever right now so I'm sure what you are even talking about.
