He's right but maybe a little more explaining would be of help. Generaly you can find worms in well mulched areas that are not bone dry. They won't be much deeper than 6 inches unless the soil is loose. After a good soaking rain you can pick them up on the surface sometimes on sidewalks or other hard surfaces. They trying to escape from the water. If that fails, buy from a bait shop. You can also raise your own, try googling worm farming.

Ok, I'm from Georgia and this is how we use to get worms when I was a kid.
Get you a wooden stake, about 18" long. Wet the ground, about 4ft radius. Drive the stake into the ground with about 6 inches left above ground. Take a brick and rub the top of the stake at an angle. This will cause a vibration in the ground. If there are worms in the area, it will drive them to the top.
Don't laugh until you try it. I buy mine at a bait shop now though.
If you try it, post up the results....it'll work!

Fisher11man, I see you are from Houston. That is where I grew up and I had no trouble finding record breaking size nightcrawlers... It's simple, after a good rain find wet leaves and pine needles on the ground and rake them up. Right underneath would always be a good community of bait. Or just eat some under-cooked pork.

Not many night crawlers can survive in brick hard red clay in 100 degree heat.
When I was growing up in Indiana we would go to golf courses on a wet night and get night crawlers from greens. Used to get enough to last all summer that way.

Not sure how it was made but when I was a kid my Dad had a coper rod with an electric cord attached to it. We would put it in the ground and go plug it in. In a few minutes the worms would come up everywhere. If anyone has info on how to build one I need it because my Dad was given this and he doesnt remember and I want one.

Look for ground that is usually wet.. and just go out in the morning, will be on the surface, or you can scoop them out with a shovel.

I always wanted to try splitting and extension cord and tying the ends to copper rods. That should run a current between the two rods when plugged in and stir up all the worms. Just never tried it.

I almost typed out the instructions for building an electric "worm rod" but I came to my senses. I made several as a young man and they all worked fantastic, problem is, they all ran on 120vac and can flat kill you if misused. Never killed anyone with the ones I built, but got shocked more than a few times, non of which were pleasant. If you ever do decide to build and electric worm rod, please exercise due caution. Wear non conductive rubber soled shoes. Don't let sweat or any form of water get on the rod while it is plugged in. When you start passing 120vac through you body, your muscles will no longer belong to your brain. In other words, your head will be screaming "LET GO IDIOT!", but your muscles will just clamp right down! Take it from me, it's a lot safer to go to Wal-mart!
And grandpa75672, take it from some one who has "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!", what you are thinking about is very dangerous.

Used to live in town and had a lot more trees and fallen leaves to help keep the moisture in the soil and the garden worms closer to the surface. Take a cup of gasoline and pour it on the ground. Garden worms come top side to get out of the gas.

We would stand far enough away to not get shocked. When the worms would come to the top one would unplug it and the other would collect the worms.
