Thanks Robin!

I also need to give you credit for your thread on the Davy knot. I doubt if my old clinch knot would have held. I swear by the Davy knot!! I really don't think it needs to be retied until I want to switch flies.

Praise be to Davy Wotten up on the White River. Great knot is it not? I have had hooks break and that knot still held fast.

I found this video for the Davy Knot. I think I am gonna have to try it after all these rave reviews.

With a little practice, you should get to where you can tie on a new fly in seconds and it will REALLY HOLD. I tend to change flies more often then I did prior to learning the Davy knot.

As Robin mentioned in the Davy knot thread, get some heavy mono line and practice a while. You'll have it down in no time.

I caught a bunch of fish today. I decided to go while the weather cooled a bit from the rain. It was finally worth a trip. I lost count on the fish. I caught my first catfish on the fly rod today. It went after a olive woolly bugger. I caught a nice bass on a Joe's Hopper. I caught several on poppers. I only used about 6 different flies today. The weather was not too hot, and I really enjoyed the afternoon. I did have something with teeth take one of my flies, it was big, but it cut through my line. I lost a couple of bass after that. I think the fish with teeth must of barely clipped my line in a couple of spots. I am going to replace the tippet. I lost two poppers today on fish. The tippet was 6pd mono. I am thinking it must of been a bowfin, or a small gar that bit through my line. Anyway, at last, a good day in the summer....hehehe.

I went to Lake O' The Pines today. Yes I got a slight look at it, but it was splashing so I couldn't get a good look to see EXACTLY what it was. It was pretty big, but not huge. It fought like a monster....whatever it was. Next thing I know, the line goes snap. Just when my blood was really pumping, I was excited....sigh. Oh well, at least I had it on a little while....hehehe.

Kelly your tippet is too small. I use 14# mono as a leader when I am fly fishing for bass, anthing smaller than that and you'll lose too many flies. Bass and bluegill are not leader shy, and there is usually no reason to use small tippets. Also, don't forget to re-tie after catching a few fish because they will fray the line and weaken it.

Thanks Clifford, you are probably right about that. If I am going strictly after bass, I use my bigger fly rod. This time I figured I would go after sunfish, or bass. (there aren't many big bass where I go) For that line I use much heavier tippet. It is either 12 or 14 pd mono if I remember right. I was using I think ten pound on the smaller 5wt, but I was having a hard time tying the smaller flies on it. The flies I lost were no big deal...but still that is money that will have to be replaced...Now I have no small white poppers. I noticed something was eating into one of my green smaller panfish poppers too, little chipped paint spots, and the cork was starting to show a bit. Now and then where I go you can get a decent sized white or hybrid...but I can't cast far enough yet to reach them...:-( There is a rare 14 inch crappie out that way too. I know where they are, if they are biting. I wish you were gonna be at the Tyler dinner tonight. (as well as the rest of the crew here...but I know it is a far drive) I am thinking of going to it. I like to meet fellow TFF folks.

JB's flies are not the only one's that catch fish. This morning I went tubing on the same little 3-acre private lake I went to last Sunday, except today was better. I started off with a winged black beetle that Dale had tied once upon a time and caught 33 bass on it. Then I put on a LSU foam spider Dale tied and caught more bass on that. Then I tied on a black, then an olive #10 conehead wooly bugger that Dale had tied and caught a bunch more bass on them. Total for the day was 96 bass to 2#, and 10 green sunfish with three of them 11".

My son and I went to Lake O' The Pines today, and surprisingly we did not do too good. I just got two little bitty bluegill. My son got a bass and a bluegill. I didn't see anyone catching anything worth looking at. I thought with the cooler weather today the fish would be biting like crazy, I was wrong. I even rearranged my fly boxes just for the trip. At least now I can see most everything. I have five fly boxes slap full. I thought it was four, but I found another stuffed in my vest...lol. Pretty soon I will need a gear bag just for my dang flies, especially if I keep tying!!!

A classic description of a bass heavy pond....big sunfish, small numerous bass.

Cliff, not that its any of my business, but that pond could be producing 4 pound bass with a few going 8-10 if every bass under 14 inches were removed. Catch and remove, not release, on small bass in a pond will yield much larger bass, if that is considered desirable. Again, not wanting to stick my nose in where it may not be wanted, but significantly larger bass can consistently come out of that pond, if its managed somewhat.

Meadowlark you are absolutely correct about that, the lake is vastly overpopulated with small bass. It is owned by a corporation and they took my suggestion that it needs to be culled. Im going to "help" them do that tomorrow. banana

I am gonna be just as bad about collecting flies to use in my arsenal as I am conventional gear. Remember my tackle box? LOL. It is a guide sized box, plus another big tote bag full of plastic boxes, FULL of lures and gear. This is an obsession I am afraid.
