Don't worry about taking a rod with you, Monday is Cinco de Mayo. In english, that means "excuse to party"...

LHD, you will need more than a 5 weight to deal with the wind down there. Minimum of 7-8 weight for the flats. The bonefish are smaller in Mexico...but even if the wind lays enough to fish a 5 weight, small bones will outclass you with gear that light. If you plan to fish the lagoons for juvenile tarpon, you will need a 9-10 weight. Take lots of clousers, shrimp and crab imitations, crazy charlies. Also, might want to try to tie a few "toads" for the tarpon. The flats fish in clear water can be very skittish. Make sure you have plenty of smaller flies in natural colors and flourocarbon leader material. The only "dry" fly that will work is a top water popper. Try something like the VIP that Scott Sparrow designed. (www.lagunamadre.net)
hope this helps.

I agree w/BigLou. Plan to fish with a 9 wt because of the wind, which almost never stops. Take an 8 wt in case it gets less than 15 and/or you are in a sheltered area. Whatever you decide to fish with, make sure you have a minimum of 200 yards of backing...you will need it, very likely.
I prefer "Gotchas" over Charlies for the bones there but either way be sure you have some without any weight and some with weight. Tans and whites work best for me in size 6 and 8. Try to match the colors of the bottom you are fishing. You should have a real good shot at Permit also...so take some crab flies of various sizes and colors. The Permit are numero uno in my book.
As mentioned, forget dry flies, leave them at home, but take along a couple of big poppers. It is an absolute blast to throw them at barracuda on the flats.
For Tarpon in that area, my go to fly is the cockroach with black death an alternate.
Good luck and have a blast!!

I was pulling everybody's chain, trying to spell every word the way I typically see it spelled wrong here, and all the 5 wt trout rod stuff But the trip was a blast, I just have not had time yet to put together pictures to post.

I know it's been a long time (2 months already) since I came back from Mexico, but, I thought I'd pass on some links for those of you that still wanted to see the goods. In the end, I waded through 6 gigabytes of pictures and video. I put together some clips of Chad and I and some of our fish so that the two of us could share with friends and family ,but, when it came time to edit the photos, I decided to save time by only doing mine -- and letting Chad do his! I hope y'all don't get the wrong impression about the size of my ego on that one but I figured 99% of the people I sent this to wouldn't know my partner from the trip, and I have already burned up a lot of time working on the video portion. 22 Photos can be found at flickr.com using the following link (they can be viewed bigger with the "all sizes" link on the top left of each picture but this gives thumbnails for quick loading): http://flickr.com/photos/davespeer/sets/ A 2:30 video can be found on YouTube at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=hb6nZgzkugo Now, if I can just figure out how to get back there! Dave

You must bow to El Sabalo gringo! ha! that first tarpon jump with the big bow... that fish jumped 7 times... and the guide tried to land it by swiping at its tail with a net... i bolted, jumped, and threw the hook... but i got a good look at it...

I know the feeling. Tarpon are the only fish I ever felt were actually mocking my efforts to catch them!
Oh yea, my Mexican guide was about as much help. Between him yelling in broken english, "GO IN MANGROVE! GO IN MANGROVE! My fishing buddy laughing hysterically, and some 40 lb crazed fish from Hades jumping six feet out of the water with flips and twist to rival an olympic diver on the other end of the line, I didn't stand much of a chance.
