Took it in today to a "Driver's Edge" auto shop. They quoted me $1k to replace the accumulator, compressor, decharge/recharge, filtermathingy and a bunch of other stuff. I WAS IN SHOCK. It's a 2004. I questioned the mechanic's opinion and left paying only $166 for a re-charge.

Found out- I actually DID by an extended service plan with Ford.

WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! It's all covered~ thumb

Sounds like you made the right move...just think if you had them fix it and then learned you had the warranty...DOH...

It doesn't matter. No auto company actually makes their ac parts anyway. They contract 'em out to the lowest bidder. "can you get me 200,000 of these compressors per year at this price?" One company will make them one year, then the next year, it may be another one.

So here is my advice. If you have to do A/C work, go ahead and replace the Dryer, accumulator, compressor, and other parts like the O-tube. If your system has been open for more than a week or two, the other parts besides the compressor will also be bad.

Save yourself money and just replace it all.

the chev 2004 compressor if its the original has inherent problems with a casing leak. If the compressor is good and not leaking. Replace the accumulator the dryer is built in it. Replace the orings on the compressor manifold and pull a 29.9 in vacum on the system. If you have ever changed the compressor in the past and not changed the accumulator the compressors are real notorious for spitting broken parts in to the system so getting a new dryer into the system in imperative.

You can buy the can of coolant with a hose for 15 dollars at Auto Zone.
