Me RACKnFIN and two other friends just got back late Sunday night from doing a 25 mile trip down the Devil's and I'm just now recovering! The south wind was really blowing and this time it seemed like it kicked our butts more than usual. We had a blast and caught a few fish.

Ok sorry....I'm just figuring this out! We put in at Bakers Crossing and you have to go 14 miles the first day to make it to the State Natural Area and with a 15mph south wind it is very tough to do but these land owners do not mess around and we often have to paddle into the night to get there. Once we made it to the natural area the next day is a much easier float of 9 miles to a friend of mines house and he takes us back to our car at Bakers if you don't get out there you have to go another 24 miles to Rough Canyon on Amistad and the river gets wider with steeper canyons which of coarse makes more WIND! If there wasn't any rapids you could fly up river in a couple of hours but you wouldn't want to pull your boat up those rocky rapids. We always have one person slowly paddling while the other is fishing and we trade off.

Two of us actually went over the falls, not on purpose either.
It runs into Lake Amistad.

Man, you just got me really excited with those pictures.

I'm going next month for the first time. I'll be there for a few days. My girlfriend's aunt has a 500 acre Ranch that the Devils River runs through, so I'll be fishing the heck out of it. Any tips on what baits worked best?

Always wanted to do that trip. We did 4 days and 46 miles on the Llano in college.

Just a question...where were you camped? I know landowners are protective down there. Looks like you were on the banks at some point.

When i fished it i used plastic lizards and i let the current take them down river and pretty much caught all my fish that way.

One thing I will say about the Devil's is that no one really wants you there. The river opened for public use in 1991 and it really upset the land owners so they decided they would make it very tough on all paddlers and I believe they would prosecute you for looking at their land if they could! You can camp at Bakers Crossing and hang out there but once you go down river you are in some of the most wilderness parts left in this incredible state. Once you make it to the S.N.Area you are only allowed to camp one night and they want you out of there and you are only allowed to camp in one spot. If you decide to put in at the S.N.Area you are not allowed to camp and your not allowed to day use the river the park rangers charge a fee to drive your truck to the river and drop you off and then they park your truck back at the headquarters and you are not allowed to pull your boat out you must go down river. Everyone at the Devil's is very protective of this jewel and hopefully this will keep it protected!

I did the trip with a couple of friends. We camped out on an island during the 2nd night only to awake to an old rancher taking pictures of us from his jeep. We got out of there and I am not sure what we were doing wrong, if anything at all.

We had to pull the canoe ALOT! But we had a blast.
