I know of a place with some big flats about 6 feet deep. There is a spot about 18-20 ft deep real close to the flats. I have put out jugs there three seperate times each time catching a big Blue. But only one each time. Each one on live bait. Should I pull up to this spot anchor and fish with rod and reel? Should I try throwing out some range cubes first? I have never been able to get into good catfish with rod and reel at a lake. Just lately started doing okay with jugs. The flats do taper up to 1.5 to 2 ft of water if I should be shallower.

Thinking about going tonight. Any Advice? This channel cuts into the flats and is pretty deep. Fish the Channel or the flats? The six foot water or 2 ft water. There are patches of Hydrilla growing in the six ft water. Range cubes or no. The fish caught on Jugs have all been set during the day. I am going to night fish tonight. This must have bee an old hayfield or something at one time. All fish on jugs have been on live bait. Goldfish or Perch. I may bait a few hooks with danny king blood bait as well.

I read somewhere that they were catching some big blues in 1-2 ft. of water at night because they come up shallow to feed at night. I would try using cut shad in 1-2 ft. of water and chumming with range cubes wouldn't hurt either. I think the key is using the whole fresh shad or fresh cut shad is the ticket. I hope this helps. Also use a lighted bobber to keep your bait just off the bottom and also to SEE the strikes. Good luck!!

I'm with Charles. Get shallow, use lighted bobbers but stay with the live bait. I don't suppose you would be adverse to a big ole flathead trying to pull your arms off would ya? The live bait is attractive to both the big blues and the Flatheads so I would stay with it.

My granddad would always tell me the big flat heads feed every 4 days.He would always catch them. I use perch and a 12' surf rod. I don't use a cork, just a carolina rig with a two ounce weight. I keep the line tight so the perch pulls against the rod tip and has no slack to tie me up. I also tie my rod into the boat with alot of slack, just in case the big boy pulls the rod over, I can still retrieve the rod. Caught quite a few flat heads with that set up. Seems to me the big flat heads feed more by sight then smell. Hope you catch a big one. cheers

If in fact the fish are on that drop off ledge ,go up and down it watching ur sonar verry close, and go verry slow, right on the top edge ,then on the deep side ,and then on the shallow side make your passes 10 to 20 yards apart,if you spot those big clumps of what you beleve to be CATFISH holding still eather on the top bottom or up on the ledge, stop and get on them with cut and live bait. If you dont have any luck on the ledge then switch to the flat shallow water fishin, or make a few drifts at difernt depts. you can put them biguns in the boat on rod and reel !!!!!!!!
