July 15, 16, 17 hit the surf north of Packery. Caught numerous trout and released anything under 18”. On the 15th we only kept 3, the largest being 23’. Best day was the 16th. We kept 9 trout to 25”. My friend released a 27” and I released a massive 28” that must have weighed 8-9 lbs. Also caught a mack that weighed about 5 lb. Larger fish were caught around noon. I also had all the line stripped off my Stradic. Was really taking line fast, went to tighten down the drag and it had already stripped all 160 yds off. PING!! Was 3.5 to 4 ft tarpon. Jumped twice. Line gone in 5 seconds. The 17th we kept 7 trout 18-25”. Weed and current were a problem on the 15th but not so much on the other days. All fish caught on free lined piggies. Could not get any luck on lures. Surf sunrise 9 trout 18 to 23 inches and a mack Danny with a 24 inch trout, fillet and release 28 inch trout released

Nice report and pics... "hit the ((surf) (north) of (Packery)"... That should answer, your 2+3 ?'s... How far north of Packery Channel is my?... And with Dolly coming in...Don't think seaweed will be a problem... Just going to take awhile till the water clears up again...

How deep is the Packery Channel? I'm guessing 8'-12' deep on average low tide...Seen several boats, go thru it full throttle from the mouth to about 300 yards from the boat ramp there before the bridge...But don't quote me on that...Being this weekend was my first time there...

That is correct it is 8' to 12' deep. I run full throttle through it all the time.

I was wondering... Would a 14 jon boat with a 15 hp motor be safe to fish from in the packery channel?

yes it would be plenty safe as long as you dont go out side the mouth...on a normal day its usualy smooth in there..on ocassion if its real rough off-shore you might get some rollers in there...but i would say you would be fine.

Was at the PC this saturday (8-02), water was off color in channel...2 more weeks of good weather and no high winds, hoping the green water will be in closer...But hard to predict it seems...Being I thought it would be in better shape this weekend than last...Oh well, always next time...
Managed 5 keeper trout at GISP pier(Fri.-Sat. night this weekend) on piggy perch, but only 10"-14-3/4" on artificials...Still thick under lights there at night...But still mostly schoolies...

I'm heading to the packery channel tomorrow. I hope to get into a few reds and trout either there or in the surf on Saturday. I'm headed to the Port A jetties Sunday. I'll post a report when I get back. I'll take pics of all keepers, but I'm still not up on how to post pics here. Can hardley wait.

If you don't do any good there and get a chance...Go to GISP(gate closes at 10p.m.) for night fishing on there pier for specks...Should still be lots of schoolies in the lights, but there should be a few keepers mixed in...Also the bait shop just right next to Fulton Beach pier...Has cheap bait...$5.00 for 2 lbs of dead-shrimp, $4.50 a dozen for croaker, and $5.50 a doz. for piggies...And believe they usually open 24 hours a day on the weekends...That was there prices last week anyhow...And if going straight to Rockport-Fulton via GISP, I take Hwy 188 off of I-37 to get there...Seems faster to me anyhow...
Also, if you have a 6'-7' cast net...You should be able to get some small finger mullet, right of shoreline in the surf on the north side of north jetty of the PC...Caught mine in about 1 foot of water as the waves were rolling out 5'-50' from jetty...Was thinking of going to GISP again tonight, then hit PC and PINS tomorrow...But I'm going to wait till the water clears a bit... Good luck!!

I may have to give it a go. thank you for the good info. I'm ready to get the salt water fishing started. Then it's on for the white bass fishing at Sommerville later this year.
Always appreciate your reports.

Yeah, I have a conservation Pass for all State Parks...Which only cost you an extra $2.00 to fish the pier at GISP...But I mainly got the pass to fish Newmans bottom, Irwin Bridge for white bass in the spring...Best place for the white bass run (as far as bank fishing) IMO in the state...Just ask fishytx, the master of Yegue Creek... If you taking your small boat, there some nice oyster reefs to fish from in GISP also in the early morning...Plus the bay side of PC, sure looks sweet also...But have yet to try it yet...Might be going to fish outside PortA with new friend in his boat a few mile out Saturday...wooohoo... Good Luck

It's been a week since I've had time to log on and post anything. My girlfriend and I went to the Packery Channel North Jetty last saturday 8/9/08. I was busy helping her catch fish. She caught a dozen or so sand trout. She caught 3ft black tip shark. That was exciting! We took a few pictures of it and let it go. I managed a few sand trout and several ribbon fish. I bought her a dozen Crokers, and some live shrimp. I used new penny shrimp, and a gold spoon.
Later in the afternoon she caught a second 2.5 ft. black tip shark. This time we were on the surf near Mustang Island State park. I managed some video of it, then we released that one too. Sunday we fished the surf again near Port A. Lots of hard heads, gaftop. We caught one 20" spec just before we had to leave to make that long drive to Austin. I didn't see much come out of the Packery or the surf. It's still kind of early for the reds yet. I'll be back later in September. Keep those reports coming.
