What do I need to legally own a gun in Texas. Not concerned with being able to carry it, as much just legally owning it and having it in my house or vehicle. I see allot of good deals of folks selling some on the THF, and would like to get one, one of these days.

You need nothing but a clean criminal record to own a firearm. ( no felonies)

Hand someone money and they hand you a gun. It's that simple. Unless you buy from a dealer or a gun store then you have to fill out the yellow forms and wait about 15 mins for a background check.

Go down to the local Academy and tell them you want a defender type shotgun for home defense.
Buy about two boxes of #8 birdshot and go to your local rifle range or out in the country if you know someone who has property, and fire off those two boxes.
Get real familiar with the gun where you can load it, know how many rounds are in the the gun, fire it once, and unload it and reload it, while doing all that with your eyes closed.
A shotgun you just need to be comfortable, and know it like it's part of your arm, and you don't need to do a lot of practicing because anything within twenty to thirty feet, you should be able to hit with no problem, once you familiarize yourself with the gun.
Birdshot is ideal for home defense as it won't penetrate outer walls of your home or adjacent rooms, but it makes a mess of those who get hit with it.
Buckshot loads mixed with the birdshot is good insurance also as are slugs should you need to penetrate a car windshield.
Have fun with your new firearm.

When did the waiting period for hand guns disappear? I haven't bought a gun from commercial place for more than ten years. Try to keep my trading between private individuals. No one needs to know what I have but me. myself, and I, and I'm not too sure about the latter two.

It is a myth that the paperwork is sent to the government. The dealers keep it until they close down and it is then that the government gets it or the paperwork is destroyed. The only other way for them to know is if they found a gun and traced it back to the store. Then they can get the paperwork.

Have fun with your new firearm. Why would you need to penetrate a car windshield?? plannin a drive-by?? yeah a slug will go through the windshield, the seat, the trunk, through the neighbors front door, through the back wall, through the neighbors privacy fence and drain the neighbors above ground pool three block away. I would not recommend bird shot for home defense, you want to stop him NOW, not when he passes out from the pain. double 00 buck would be perfect for home defense.
