Went on vacation last week, just before I left I noted rodent droppings under my boat cover. I vacumed all I could find and placed some of that rat sized sticky paper to try to capture the offending critter. Got home and found more dropping and no captured rodents. So I uncovered the boat, vacumed more droppings out and went to the lake. Pulled up at the paybox and while filling out the envelope caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. Thinking I was just gun-shy blew it off and finished the envelope and deposited it. While turning around to reenter my truck to move to the launch prep area I spotted a rat running around the top deck as if looking for an escape path. I approached the rat who decided to stand his ground, raise up on his back legs and I would almost say growled at me. (now I know how Jimmy Carter felt with his killer-rabbit encounter). Now, being a fairly normal guy who is not going to be discouraged that easily I did the usual manly-man thing and yelled at it. The monster beast stood his ground. So I did the next manly-man thing and wacked his arse flying with my flip-flop. (ok, no manly-man flip-flop jokes, least they were not crocs). The rat hit the pavement and ran right back to the trailer and in 2 hops was back on the boat for round 2. Another round of yelling and another wack with my other flip-flop had the rat again launched onto the pavement. He headed right back for the trailer again so I stepped in between him and the boat as it ran towards me (kinda limping this time, and sure to have been p-o/ed). Needless to say I was doing some high stepping and yelling as he ran between my feet (me totally barefoot at this point) and tried to hide behind my trailer tires. Each attempt to scare him out only sent him to the opposite side tire. I was afraid he was gonna climb back in so I didn't want to just drive off as I didn't have a spotter to watch what he was doing in the meantime. Anyhow after a several min standoff (both my flip-flops trashed in my attempts to wack him again) I gave up and got in my truck and drove away. I waved several tow vehicals around me as I was doing an extended walk around on the boat inspecting for not only possible rat-damage but looking for some of his buddies waiting to gang up on me once launched and out on the lake. Noting only minor damage I moved to the ramp and launched only to have my bow line break (rat chewed) and my boat float off without me. Another boater recovered it for me as I parked my truck and trailer. I apoligized for their trouble and thanked them and told them the story. They had a nice chuckle then left.
So, have any of you boaters had rat problems in the past and how did you resolve it? My sons Grandpa-in law had over $400 in rat damage and almost set his boat on fire a couple of years ago.
Whats your rat story???

It sure would have been nice if someone would have gotten that on video... Never had any rats in the boat, but did have a water moccasin in the boat. ...Maybe you should put a rat snake in your boat.

Do you have a cat? My father and I used to hunt at my grandfather's place, and thanks to the cats, we never found a single dropping in our hunting trailer... and we kept plenty of food in there.
Conversely, when my grandfather passed away, and all the cats moved off, our hunting camp was over run with rodents.
If you live in the country (or a small town) a couple cats in the boat house/garage, etc might help out.

I was wondering why there was some fat guy dancing around on his boat screaming like a little girl. Was that you? I thought maybe you had some fireants in your shorts. For a fat guy you sure can move fast. LOL.....

-Sniper Good thing they weren't Crocs.... They are too expensive and too comfortable to be throwing at a rat. Good story. Wish I had seen it....

Ok, upon todays inspection, I did not see any new evidence of rodent activity. I have 2 sheets of that sticky rat-paper and a regular snap type trap baited with peanut butter and or cheese. But just for giggles tomorrow I am going to move the boat out into the street and partially fill the inner hull with water see if I can flush any critters out. Will have Callie the wonder dog on standby to hopefully dispatch the offending rodents once they pop up from hiding.
Another friend also suggested firing off a can of bug fogger in the inner hull and try to smoke em out.
Anyone tried this approach?

had a mouse ina boat one time up in oklahoma, guess that is what you get for leaving it out in the feild, but anyway...Get out there and out he came..I grabbed his little but and threw him overboard..I was having fun watching him swim for his life, then when it gets by the cattails...a big ol bass decided he was hungry...Man I should have tied a hook on to it...

I had mice get in mine and chew my cork handles a few years back. I put out the old fashioned traps and caught some and the mouse poison. I find one dead behing my freezer every now and then. But they are not in my boat.

I have the opposite problem. With my boat cover on the local feral cats seem to like my boat as a "cathouse". My boat smells like cat pee and there's fur on the carpet in one corner. Tellya what I'll do...I'll trap the cat and bring him over to live in your boat and he'll solve your rat problem. Once he's done, stick Cally the wonder dog in your boat then that'll solve your cat problem. To get the dog out of the boat, you'll have to get your butt in the boat to kickem out.

I have moth balls in two dog bowls placed in the boat. One at the bow seat area and the other by the aft seat. My boat is covered. I didn't want the squirrels to chew it to pieces like they did my z3 cover. This is working well for me. No incidents... yet.
I don't notice the moth smell except when removing the cover and even then, it is not strong. Once off, I don't notice it at all. Maybe I'm just use to it.

Boy that was one persistent, pesky little rodent. I always try to keet a stick or something in my boat. Never know when you have to go upside something or someone's head.

I do not have anymore problems with cats or rats because I park my boat in the back yard where Goliath (Lab/Boxer mix) resides. I had a rat problem once though. When I lived in Roanoke we had a lot of tree rats and I decided to collect Xmas trees to bait holes. Well storing the trees near the boat was a bad idea. They got in the boat and chewed on one fishing rod handle and some foam floatation. I decided to get out the poison which was good and bad. It got rid of the rats but in going for water they chewed a livewell hose. Of course I did not realize it until I got to the lake and heard water running.
I had a buddy that had cat problems. He had about 4 living in there. One day he said the heck with it and just off down the road and they started bailing. Well one decided to ride it out and that was a mistake. My buddy said that the last time he saw it it was trying to make a 1/4 mile swim across RR.

Go to Walmart and get you a sling shot. Bet you can get rid of the rats that way. I use the sling shot to also shoot my range cubes into the lake.

sniper, that rat probably had babies or a nest in your boat somewhere - that is why there was such a fight. Had one in the old garage do that one time. Defending the nest.

Well, it's been several days and I have not seen anymore signs of a rodent infestation. Hopefully he was too winded from our skirmish at MM to not reboard my boat one last time prior to my driving off. I did flood the inner liner of the boat at home and hopefully drownded any other occupants. Will be keeping an extra eye out in the future!
