I want to have a vote and see how many people here think they are a good idea

For those that dont know what "whiskey" plates are, I'll give a brief description.

Under current DWI laws in Minnesota, any person that violates any of the conditions listed down below, the driver's license plates may be revoked and replaced with what are commonly known as whiskey plates. The license plates in Minnesota start with a “W”. These plates start with clearly identifiable letters that identify the vehicle to police officer as a vehicle that is regularly driven by a person with more than one DWI offense on his/her driving record.

# A first offense DWI if the test result is 0.20% or more, or the driver fails to stop at a railroad crossing or there is a passenger in the vehicle under the age of 16.
# A second DWI within 5 years of a prior.
# A third DWI within 15 years of two or more priors.

The driver that is issued whiskey plates can not drive any other car besides the one he had whiskey plates installed on. (I think they issue whiskey plates for every car under there name) so if u have 2 cars under your name, they give u two plates, but those are the only two cars u can drive.

Now a cop can not pull you over without "probable cause" but we all know what that means.

So speak up, whos for it and whos against it.
And feel free to list how many DWI/DUI's have.

really? Letting other drivers and cops know who are the irresponsible drivers leads to that?

DWI/DUI convictions can be handled even simpler.
Forfeiture of the vehicle
Forfeiture of the driver license
Incarceration
And I imagine there are additional penalties that could be applied.
Still cheap compared to the maiming or MURDER of another person due to the actions of some drunk s.o.b.

After my boss got his 5th DWI, he finally got some time in the state pen. If I remember right, he got a 7 year sentence and only served 4 years.

Luckily he never killed anyone and he thought that Johnson County SO was after him... eeks

He recently called work saying that he just got out of the halfway house and was looking for work. Luckily we dont have any openings.

As far as I am concerned, the judicial system is way to leanient (sp) with DWI's.

Longevity in the wholesale wine and spirits business means adhering to the first rule - Do Not Drink and Drive !!

We as agents are issued licenses by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. We must have this to sell product.

One DUI and your license is void.

I do not agree with the application of enforcement by tag ID.

This is a lot of the reason that I am all for stiffer DWI laws.

My dad was driving the Chevy and mom was in the passenger seat along with 2 or 3 others that were in the back seat.

The wreck eventually killed all of the drunk sailors that were in the VW and almost killed my mom. They had already called the funeral home for her. Luckily she lived but has a huge scar on her arm as a daily reminder of the accident.

The guys in the VW were all drunk and as they topped the hill at the same time as my parents, but the drunks were in my parents lane and they hit head on.

So... If you ever see me at a BBQ cookoff or any TFF get together and wonder why I'm not drinking, if I don't have a designated driver, this is why.

I like the wine in a box, but I have some snooty neighbors that are in a wine club, and it pizzed them off when I brought a box over one night for a BBQ.

I did it as a gag, but they didn't seem to see the humor in it that I did.

For rhose that choose to offend and have not got caught. It's like riding a motorcycle. Those who have been down and those who are going down.

Thanks for the support. Know that a lot goes on when something like this happens. And in grand total were talking about less than 3 seconds and it could have been avoided. Now she and her friend are gone this dude with a great job and family with a baby. Plus grandchildren it just stretcehs a long ways. The lingering effects. It's all to easy to participate but the conncessquince's. It's not worth it no more.. I wish everybody could just get it. And it is a disease.........

hungI'm all for it. I compare drinking and driving with Russian Roulette. You can only pull that trigger so many times before someone dies.

Ohio does something similar. They issue tags that have red letters on a bright yellow background. Really stands out amongst Ohios' mostly white plates.

The purpose is two fold. The shame of being convicted is placed on your car for all to see.

And secondly it is used as a compliance tool. If you are granted occupational work privileges to drive to and from work only, then stopping at any parking lot will quickly draw the attention of LEO.

Too many offenders abused the work or school privilege and this was one way to make them compliant with their sentencing. Makes it almost impossible to blend in with your surroundings.

I don't have a problem with the tags. They earned them and it should be a part of their probation...a scarlet letter so to speak. Shame is way under-rated. When probation is over the tags come off. I suspect bar parking lots would be full of them...but then again maybe they would get a ride with someone else. I supect hardcore drunks would sell their car, buy a differnt one and not register it in their name or just rent one.
