The State has stocked many Stripers in Lake Livingston and yet you just don't here much about people catching them.

Anyone know why that is? Do people just not fish for them? Or fish for them but use poor techniques? Or, do the Stripers just not do well in Lake Livingston?

It is interesting that many (most?) of the Stripers that are stocked in Texas waters comes from the eggs collected from Stripers below the dam on Livingston...and yet the fishery in the lake seems to be poor?

I've recently moved to the area full time and would like to fish Livingston for Stripers....but wondering if it will be worthwhile....taking my first shot at it on Tuesday.

By the way, it is a terrific white bass lake, maybe as good as any...but Stripers are a mystery.

Your thoughts appreciated.

I just moved to Jacksonvile from Livingston and you are correct. People just don't target stripers there, in fact they usually get caught while trolling for whites.
There are some good striper spots on the lake, and if you fish them right you can avoid the whites and get the stripers only, with a few blue cats thrown in the mix once in a while.
Standard practice for whites is a pet spoon trolled across humps behind a hookless hellbender, or a Charlies slab jigged on humps. If you want stripers, try doublng the spoon size and trollor jig the deeper humps than you are finding the whites on.

Are the whites surface schooling on Livingston?

Well, I was hoping to get some discussion of the Stripers on Livingston. hmmm

Centexbass,

Thanks for your comments. I've used the pet spoon technique but only caught whites....and also only fished the old 190 road bed area.

I'm going to explore the Pine Island area throughly and also the upper end of the lake.

Ever use live bait for Stripers on Livingston? I've got ponds with a ready supply of perfect bait and thought I'd see if maybe those Stripers can be caught that way. Thanks again for your comments.

Just checked and T,P,&W has been stocking Stripers on Livingston every year averaging just under 1,000,000 fingerlings each year...they have to be somewhere...maybe that's why the blues are so big on the Lake?

There is a particular spot where I used to catch stripers regularly on Livingston.
Come south out of Kickapoo Creek, follow right hand shoreline to the next cove. Jump straight across the mouth of the cove and there is a point. Keep following the RH shoreline past that point about 50 yards and you will come to an old RR track that is underwater running straight out from the shore, but you would never know it was there without a depthfinder. The water will go from 15' up to about 6' really quick, then drop right back on other side of tracks. Fish those tracks (between point and 1st boathouse you see)and you can get some stripers usually. I have caught them on Chrome traps as well as Pet Spoons in that area.
Hope this helps.

Got a quick limit of whites today working the old river channel north of Walkers. I found the "lump" and "hump" at Pine Island and think I know where the RR track is that Centexbass mentioned above.

No stripers today....but tons of whites. Lots of lake to explore and GPS waypoints to mark. Mucho fun!!

Bingo!! First Livingston striper today...hopefully not the last. Lots of fish around the lump taking pet spoons today. A really nice day on the lake.
