While I was out in Cali a few weeks back, the hands free law took place (July 1). So people cannot be on the phone while driving, unless they are using a hands free device. And teens are not allowed on the phone period while driving.
I hate to say it, but I love that law. I have been back in Texas for 2 weeks and the number of dangerous or annoying situations that I have witnessed with people on the phone while driving is unreal. And here's the kicker, I work from home, so I commute way less than most of you. I know that NOT all drivers are inconsiderate, distracted, or dangerous while driving and talking on the phone, and yes, hands free devices are readily available. But seems that common sense is not in order for allot of these idiots on the phone.
Also, I don't want to start an uproar with the few woman TFFrs on here, but does it seem that most of these distracted drivers are women?

People in California also elect people like Pelosi and Feinstein to congress. I just don't think that shows a bunch of smarts.

California drivers are a lot more courteous on the road than Texas drivers. There are so many more people; they have to be. They do things like use their turn signal, allow people to merge into a lane, keep to the right if going slower than traffic etc. It makes things a lot less stressful. I agree that cellphone use while driving can be hazardous. I believe Highland Park and University Park have the same hands-free law.

it should be law everywhere, i have been to several accidents where the person at fault was on the cell phone and not paying attention. Whats even worse are the texters.
I have pulled over many people under suspicion of DWI, only to find out they were on the phone or texting. Some were weaving so bad they went completely into oncoming lanes!!

Well,,, I think exactly the opposite,,, First off if you state that Californians are smarter than Texans, but you live in Texas, then you just confessed that you aren't smart enough to make that call. Since they are smarter , they should be the one to judge. Which is actually your second strike, the first being not croaking for your own pond. Strike three comes in the form of giving up. You see I am convinced that Texans are the smrter of the two and to lend evidentiary support to this all you need do is decide who should tell you when to talk or when not to talk. Should you be from California , and not smart enough to make the decision that in heavy traffic is not a good time to talk on a phone then the State should make the decision for you since you aren't samrt enough. However in you live in Texas and you know that if the phone rings while you are in bumper to bumoer trafffic, paulling a trailer in, a construction zone, you dan't have to immedialtey answer it since you have caller ID and voice mail, when you get to that stretch between Sonora and Del Rio there will be plenty of time to talk. I could even give you a fourth strike for establing the pattern that more Government intrusion equals higher intelligence, and since California wants to outlaw all types of firearms that is must be the "smart" thing to do. Strike five = Everything California does, we must do, because they are "smart". Just how big an old boy are you anyway!!!

illegals and mexico nationals are the ones that get me. was following a guy yesterday that had mexico plates. took him to years to turn, then drove down the middle of the road. i had to go into oncoming traffic to pass him! thats just one of many experiences that ive had behind someone with mexico plates.

I would like to think that I live in the smarter of the two states, but that's just not the case. And actually, I have lived in 4 states, and each one thinks they are the smarter than the rest. And like I said, I would love for common sense to rule the land instead of the guvmt, but that is nowhere near being the case here or anywhere else that I have been to. As far as how big a boy am I, lets just say you need to pack your lunch, cause its gonna take a while

Kalifornia smarter than Texas? In a pig's eye! I suppose that's one of the reasons that Kalifornians have been emigrating in droves the last 15 years. I think that would be the smart ones, how ever many there ever were. And if all the smart ones are jumping ship, that means Kalifornia's getting dumber by the minute. Any state that can't elect a governor any smarter than "Ahnold" (aka Blaster minus Master) has to have an average IQ in the mid-60s anyway. Kalifornia---land of the fruits and vegetables!

I can count on my right hand and have fingers left over the number of times I saw the type of behavior you described. Are you sure you weren't just dreaming about California? No one uses their turn-signal to change lanes in California......not if you actually want to change lanes. If you use your signal to do that you are guaranteed to be cut-off.

Maybe it should be policed in that way......pull over the drivers that are weaving....driving too slow...obstructing traffic etc., etc. If someone is on the phone and driving properly...what' the problem?

Disclaimer - None of my derogatory comments toward Kalifornia and its inhabitants, collectively speaking, are meant to be taken personally by any particular individual.
I happen to think highly of you, BK. No offense taken. California is a beautiful state......or at least it used to be. It's been taken over by left-wing loons and illegal immigrants. If these two things were different, California would be the ideal place to live.....earthquakes and all. The weather is fabulous. The scenery unrivaled and the recreational opportunities unlimited. But the two factors I mentioned above make it unlivable. I think there is something in the water that attracts the fruitcakes and looney-tunes.

No, I wasn't dreaming; the drivers in CA are much better. There are crazy drivers there too, but they don't seem as common. I believe that has something to do with stricter enforcement of traffic laws. You see Way more CHP than troopers in Texas. You only see troopers on Saturdays and Fridays on 75. I was actually shocked when I moved to DFW and witnessed the absolutely crazy drivers in Texas. Nobody stops at stop signs; nobody uses turn signals; people sit in the left lane regardless of their speed; Texas drivers are the most arrogant, rude drivers in the country. I have even seen guys in trucks pass people in the shoulder. It is nuts in DFW.

BK, I lived there briefly when I was a kid, and have visited southern Cal many times. I agree---it's almost paradise but for all the freekin' hordes of people!
I have adjusted my thinking as to what paradise would be, and nowadays about the only attainable paradise I can imagine is somewhere in the middle of Nevada. I eventually would like to be somewhere north and west of Albuquerque. Nothing against Texas really. I just like my scenery more varied and I want to live somewhere where I can at least escape the heat and humidity. I really like Utah. Nothing against Mormons....but from what I understand, it's a bit difficult to make a living in that state if you aren't one. But I LOVE the country there. Red rock, mountains and there are so many places you can go and see absolutely nobody. I like Wyoming as well. I have relatives in Sheridan and I may move there one day. Cold though. I think winter starts the end of August and doesn't end until July 1st. Seriously.....I was out there 3 years ago and they got a foot of snow in the Big Horn Mtns. the end of June.....it was in the 50's in Sheridan. I guess you get used to it. I like Washington and Oregon, but they are too much like California poltically for my taste. And they are getting worse, as the loons from CA are migrating there as well. Colorado (certain parts), Montana and Idaho are options too. Just have to find work. Lots more public land out west. BLM and National Forest. Here....if you don't either own property or have a lease or know someone, you are out of luck. Recreational activities here are pretty much limited to lakes and golf courses. There are other things to do....but not a lot of options for getting away from the crowds.

Take a look at AZ. There are cities like Prescott and Flagstaff that don't get hot and have mountains and trees. You can still find reasonable house prices too. Also, the culture is similar to Texas. We have sheriff Joe. He has started doing sweeps for illegals.
To stay on topic, the drivers here could rival those of DFW.
I just moved to Phoenix. I am looking for houses now. I want something with mountain views from the backyard.

People do seem to negotiate the freeways a little better there....though I definitely would not say that they are more courteous. Believe it or not....its seems the worst ones are the self-important jerks driving the high-dollar Euro and Japanese imports. They really do think they own the road. For the most part......CHP are about the only police that actively patrol the highways for traffic there. Other agencies will pull you over....but it has to be flagrant. And.....CHP doesn't run radar there. Or at least they didn't. They have to clock you. But they are VERY good at it, and it holds up in court. The biggest issue I have with Texas drivers are the NASCAR wannabe's......and yeah......people do pass on the shoulder here. Ticks me off bigtime. Basically they are saying, "I'm better than you..I don't have wait". But have you ever driven in Garden Grove and Westminster, CA ? Now THAT is an experience.

I did experience the "LDS Lockout" in both Idaho and Utah. It can be vary difficult to make a living up there for non-Mormons. It would have been the same story in northern Nevada had I not been a federal employee at the time.

B.K. Don't keep telling them you came here from California. They've heard the stories about well.....I'll just let that part go! With gas prices as high as they've been I hate to get behind a line of cars at a red light, especially one that is fast cycling. The light turns green, and everyone just sits there. I notice most always everyone driving around has a cell phone in their ear, and the guy up in front of me usually does when this happens. True I can't see the other four or five cars up ahead of me, but I'm betting that they all or at least the first one is talking on the phone, so about one or two cars get through and it turns red! BTW: I'm just ribbing you B.K.

This is something that absolutely INFURIATES me. Some people act as though they inhabit a deserted planet. Asrewipes!
