"The River Why" by David James Duncan is supposed to be coming out this month. I cannot WAIT to see it...I just found out about it. I remember seeing A River Runs Through It on my birthday one year, and I remember thinking, I have got to learn how to do that. Of course having Brad Pitt star in it did not hurt a bit...lol. (I'm a woman, so please don't misinterpret that...LOL) The first time I saw somebody fly fish was up north in NY. This guy was just tearing up the trout, when nothing else was working. I wanted to learn back then, but it seemed like such a hard skill to learn. ANYWAY>>>>>>>>>>>maybe this is breaking news to some of you. I cannot wait.........I am so excited. Dang I just looked up reviews on it, and it is being FILMED this month, not out this month. The book looks fantastic. I think I will buy it and read it before the movie comes out. I never heard of it. Well after it comes out you can bet there will be more people learning how to fly fish. I hope they have a fine looking young man to play the leading part. (it won't hurt ratings a bit.....lol)

Mike I had not heard of Trout Grass. I would like to see that. Sounds very interesting. I guess nobody is interested in a fly fishing movie. (maybe it was my comments about Brad Pitt......ROTFLMBO) Sorry guys, I couldn't help myself. A River Runs Through It wasn't really a fly fishing movie anyway. It had fly fishing IN it, which we all on here know. One reason it did so well I believe was because of Brad P. I did love watching the fly fishing scenes though. It sure reminded me of seeing that fly angler in upstate NY. (He wasn't as good as the movie though...but still interesting, and he was catching a lot of trout compared to conventional anglers) Anyway I am still excited to know they are at least filming that movie. I want to see if I can find that book in paperback.

http://www.allreaders.com/Topics/info_17465.aspRobin, here is a review of the book. If they stick close to the book, it ought to be one heck of a movie!

Judging from the folks that hang out around this board, perhaps Billy Bob Thornton would be more in character to have the lead in the film.

Brimbum, now THAT was FUNNY! There is truth in that, and that is what tickles me. Good one!!
Robin, you are welcome. The movie won't be out until 2009...bummer. They are filming it now. Where I don't know. But the setting was supposed to be Oregon. William Hurt plays the dad.

I appreciate the heads up....and checked out the book review. Might be an interesting read and movie. Thanks.
Made me think that there are many real characters in fly fishing that would be great candidates for movies/books.
I'd love to see a movie about the late Del Brown, the guy whose great passion in life was to catch permit on the fly and who caught over 500 of them despite some great challenges....that movie would appeal to people who love to fish, but maybe not the general public.
How about a movie about Ted Williams life as a fly fisher... after his baseball days. I've heard some stories about him from some first hand accounts that would indeed make a great movie both for the people who love fishing and the general public (lots of spicey stuff). Arguably the greatest hitter ever in baseball who aspired to be the greatest fly fisher ever.
Dang, makes me want to go read "old man and the sea" again.

Yes they would be interesting to us fly anglers, but afraid the general public might not care about those movies. Anglers of all kinds might be interested, and that alone is a huge segment of society. The serious anglers are much less in number. Many people fish, but some only fish a few times a year. I wonder how many people do conventional fishing seriously, and fly fishing ...same thing. It is a big sport, and the women are making the numbers grow. For some reason women are just now getting into fishing...why, I am not sure. There is something special about fly fishing that would make a better movie, maybe the skill involved, and the beauty of it...that makes a better movie. I just may read the Old Man & The Sea too.....hehehe.

No, I cannot imagine that Mike. I saw a copy of the Old Man & The Sea this evening for eleven bucks, in paperback. I decided I didn't want to read it again that bad. I am sure the library has a copy, it is such a short book, I could read the whole thing there one day, without checking it out. I tried to find The River Why, but they didn't have it at the local bookstores. Bummer. I can order it at Amazon for about 10 dollars. I am thinking of doing that.

It is a shame that they did not cast Sam Elliot for the movie. If they had, perhaps they could have bought him ANOTHER of those cool Orvis bamboo rods that he enjoys so much.

If you will check w/ tackle builders they call the year that 'A River Runs Through It' came out The Year and it The Movie. Fly fishing sales went to an all time high to which they have never returned. The Movie had a profound effect on the industry that it would love to have return. Maybe this new flick will do it.

I feel quite certain this movie will do it from looking at the book reviews. The women will get pulled in because of the love story part, the men because of the fishing....then we will have the green folks interested as well. (I don't mean Martians LOL) There are more and more women interested in learning to fish, and for some reason the grace and beauty of fly fishing appeals to women. They do not see it as a manly sport. Funny I always thought fishing was a family thing, my family went when I was a kid. My mom never liked to fish too long at a time though, so she rarely went. But she sure did like to fish. My dad loved fishing and hunting. Anyway....I do not know if it will be a good thing or a bad thing that tons more people will be joining the sport. If it will bring down the price of stuff because there is more buying, it won't be too bad. If it drives it up because supply cannot meet demand, that will stink. If I was a fly fishing company, especially in the rod and reel dept....I would be making the dog out of beginner stuff right now, but decent. I would also be making lots of equipment like hats, boots, waders etc... cause I think we will see lots of people at least attempt fly fishing. I have people all the time ask me what type of fishing I am doing, and is that really fly fishing..etc... so the people are getting exposed to it. Just like when I was at the lake the other day, some folks were out there fishing, with no apparent luck. I go out there with my fly rod and boom, the biggest sunfish takes my fly...don't think they weren't watching. They see it again and again. (Plus they see me getting stuck trying to get my fly loose, lol) I hope to see some good people join our ranks.

I have mixed feelings about the prospect of more people fishing, on one hand It's great that folks will get outdoors and enjoy nature and all the positive benefits that brings, also more allies can only help fishing at large....but on the other hand, the lake I fish the most is already busting at the seams with fishermen somedays, I think bass fishing has already exploded , sometimes it's so crowded you can't get a decent spot to fish plus theres boats running all over, so the greedy part of me wants the solitude and unpressured waters.

Yes, that is absolutely right. It is hard to get a spot to fish as it is, agreed. (especially on the bank!) Times are harder, and some people are trying to get food for the table. I know it is hard for more fly fishers cause we require more space to cast in most cases. I much prefer solitude when I fish...that is why I usually fish on a weekday.

I tried to read the book-by David Duncan-several years ago. I found it boring, not technically accurate, and inauthentic. If the movie is as bad as the book, should be a real stinker.

Well I guess the book is good to some people, bad to others...cause the reviews I read on the book are excellent. If I can find it, I will get it. So far I have not found it locally, but it can be found on the net.

I think the life of Lee Wulff would make a great movie.
